Now that The Big One™ has been disclosed, we should all agree on standard definitional terms

Now that The Big One™ has been disclosed, we should all agree on standard definitional terms when discussing coins on these boards. I propose the following terms. I welcome people’s feedback.

(1) Raw slabbed: a coin that is in an old fashioned PCGS holder, and which does not have a CAC sticker.

(2) Sticker-slabbed: a coin that is in an old fashioned PCGS holder, and which has a CAC sticker.

(3) Secure Plus-slabbed: a coin that is in a new PCGS Secure Plus holder, and which does not have a CAC sticker.

(4) Secure Plus-slabbed Plus’ed slabbed: a coin that is in a new PCGS Secure Plus holder, and which as a PCGS Plus, but which does not have a CAC sticker.

(5) Secure Plus slabbed Plus’ed Sticker-slabbed: the Holy Grail of numismatists. A coin that is in a new PCGS Secure Plus holder, and which as a PCGS Plus, and which has a CAC sticker.

(6) Raw coin: virtually worthless and useless with respect to marketability.

For some reason this post reminded me of "NewSpeak"

so I'll just say that a coin is "doubleplusgood" or "doubleplusungood."

We should agree on the standard definitional terms, but that's difficult considering we haven't been able to agree on a standard.

    Longacre --

Please send me all of your (6) coins (as referenced above) and I promise to pre-pay the money for postage. That way you won't have to worry about them any more.

    Cheers,

    Greg

  • I would change number one to "Basic Slabbed", due to my magnetic aversion to oxymorons.

I would also add another: "Genuine Slabbed", with it's value above that of a "Raw Coin" being directly proportional to it's rarity.

The beauty of it is that within a one month period, one can envision the same coin easily in five of the six configurations. It's a good start.

You have, unfortunately, failed to account for PCGS Genuine, OGH, Doiley, Rattler, and the latter three, with or without a sticker. You have also failed to account for a gold sticker. Finally, while you and I would not be caught dead with one, there are some coins in other brand slabs (though other than the possible exception of NGC, these are insignificant).

After we settle on terms, please prepare a conversion chart for the less initiated (like me). For example, the PCGS "plus" takes both eye appeal and technical grade into account; the NGC "star," however, reflects just eye appeal, not technical grade. But NGC will soon start a "plus" program, too, so I suppose an NGC "star-plus" coin is equivalent to a PCGS "plus" coin. Except, of course, we know that PCGS tends to grade a bit stricter than NGC in some series at some grade levels. So, maybe an NGC "star-plus" 65 is not as nice as a PCGS "plus" 65, but an NGC "star-plus-CACgreen" 65 is as nice (except when PCGS refuses to cross it).

So, anyway, I'm looking forward to the conversion chart, Longacre. TIA. image

    Longacre,

You forgot to differentiate between CAC Green and CAC Gold stickers image

I think that I prefer Secure Plus-No Plus for coins in the new holder but not PQ and Secure Plus plus Plus for those that are PQ.
