Ft Worth TX. Coin Show report

A report without the creative adverbs of a Longacre or others on here.
Arrived at 1 pm. I paid, i walked and i left.
Actually i arrived about 1 pm and there was no waiting to pay the 6 bucks to get in. The guy asked me if i was planning on coming back saturday and i said most likely. He ask me if i would like to join the ANA for 18 bucks and i would get in free so i did.
I usually make the Houston Money show and this one so on the scale of shows i do not know if this is a big show or not. The aisles were not crowded and i was able to look at 95 percent of the display cases without being over run by others. All of the smaller dealers that make the local shows were all located in the back corner. ( i was told this was the low rent district) Upon entering the show the biggest names were up front- Kagins, Goldbergs, Heritage, legend and more. I enjoyed a nice relaxed Friday afternoon looking at a endless supply of nice widgets and ms65 dreck. It is hard to think of any coin as being rare as you walk the aisles of a big national show. I would not consider while i was there that the dealers present would classify it as busy. Half the dealers would say hello as you looked in the cases and the other half acted like you did not exist. Some made small talk and others did not. I did not consider this rude by any means as i perfer to look and then talk my self. I was looking for V-nickels and one dealer brought out a box and let me look thru any and all. ( Bruder? I will correct this later) I saw a lot of nice coins but few good deals IMO. I was turned off by one dealer that had a average lightly circulated 1884 v-nickel in AU58 NGC and said the coin was priced at 64 money and not a nickel less. I get very turned off by that type. With 3 grading services present get the coin in the correct holder ( IMO if cracked the coin had a better chance of going 55 than 60 ) While i consider most of the coins i looked at over priced i am sure others do not. Most of the dealers are probably smart enough to price there wares to where they make a living and do not need to deal with a value buyer like me. That is life
I saw the 1913 proof nickel and the gold stella on display- COOL and NICE. I saw the seated dollar display and all the others. I really enjoyed my friday afternoon.
I sold 3 raw buffalo nickels for 500 dollars and they were sold to a small regular local coin dealer. I showed them to 2 other national dealers and was quoted 90 dollars from 1 and 250 from the other. I also had a 1891 ANACS ms63 nickel that i was offered 38 and 56 from the same 2 national dealers. The samller dealer that bought the 3 raw buffalos offered 140 for the same coin. I did not sell it but the 140 was a fair offer.
I saw a lot of nice coins and i will most likely return saturday and buy a few coins i had looked at. If they are sold then i am sure another similiar widget can be located. I saw a lot of the local collectors that i see at every show. While i was there i did not see a lot of coins being bought or sold. I did not see money being thrown in the air. I left about 4:45 pm.

Thanks for the report.
Thanks for the report. It does not seem like it was a busy show.
The show seemed very busy to me. Much better than expected. In fact, I couldn't even break away to attend the announcement of "The Big One". I know, I know, it's hard to imagine!
Doggedly collecting coins of the Central American Republic.
Visit the Society of US Pattern Collectors at USPatterns.com.
I dropped off 37 coins for an upcoming auction.
Put 50 notes in for grading.
And dropped off 74 coins for variety designation/grading for their trip to Colorado.
Walked out with a hundred silver 1 ounce bars and drove a kilo of gold 5 hours to its soon-to-be new owner.
Other than that, the show seemed quiet.

Thursday was busier than today, but I suspect tomorrow will be pretty well attended. The Mint is officially releasing the Boy Scout coin tomorrow and a bunch of boy scouts are expected to attend for the coin collecting merit badge. I'm on the kids' treasure trivia tour, so I expect to have quite a flurry of kids stopping by my table as well.
For me, the show has been good, not great, but pretty good. Bought some very nice pieces both for my personal set and for inventory, including a couple cool errors from Fred Weinberg that I will post once Todd photographs them. Also bought a beautiful PCGS MS65 1858 FE with neat die cracks for my set - been looking for a nice 1858 for quite a while.
I've heard some dealers say this has not been a very good show for them, but most say it has been "ok" or "so so." I've run into just a few forum members, not as many as I thought I would see. Many dealers are staying here at the Omni, a very nice hotel with a fantastic steakhouse restaurant and a great wine bar. But we're really enjoying the regular bar here - they have two pool tables that you can play on for FREE! And their happy hour Texas beer is only $2.50! Cheap beer and free pool - what more could you want! My son Troy, who is helping me at this show, is still downstairs playing pool with a bunch of coin dealers (I hope he's kicking their butts!).

<< <i>Dr Eugene Bruder, I love searching his circ Lincoln boxes, I always find a half dozen or so must haves.....
Thanks for the report. >>
Doc Bruder Rocks!
I had a nice relaxed saturday afternoon and my 2 day purchases amount to 1 roll of 2010 D lincoln cents for 2 bucks and i picked up a couple of 100 oz silver bars. I have bids in on the Heritage auction so i need to check on them.
The local dealers in the low rent 600 dollar table area said they were having a good show. One said he did 40k on friday. He has mostly raw coins and slabs under 500 so he was happy. ( i do not know what percent was bullion)I would not call it a crowed show but all you need is a few customers that will spend 50k each to have a good show

Lots of bust halves to look at with Dr. Bruder--didn't end up with any, but there are a couple that I will eventually pull the trigger on if they are still in stock next month. Same thing with Dick Osburn and Ed Hipp. Spent more time talking with all 3 than I did actually looking at coins.
Went over to the Sheridan Downey table and looked at his 5--yes 5--raw examples of the 1827 O-124. This is a DM with a population (raw and graded combined) of around 40 to 45 known examples in existance. Each was nicer than my current example, but I just couldn't come to acceptable trade and buy terms with him. He also had a raw example of the O-137--one of only 3 DMs for the year that I am missing but something about the idea of paying 5 figures for it just didn't compute.
All in all I had a great time even without buying anything. Lots of coin conversation and fun.
<< <i> I went by Charmys table at 2:45 today and the person sitting there with short hair was not her. >>
That was my son Troy. I'm very sorry I missed seeing you. But having his help at the show frees me up to do some "shopping" which is what I ended up doing a lot of (and why I wasn't at my table when you stopped by)! Saturday was quite surprisingly NOT a good day for me, and for many others I heard. There were lots of people and kids in attendance, but not a lot of buying going on. So the show was a great buying show, but not as successful in selling. Oh well, can't have it all sometimes! But the food was great and the pool and company even better!

<< <i>I had a lot of fun at the show! It was my very first major coin show, and I was there as a dealer. I got a crash course in gray sheets, bid, ask, trade deals, dealer percentages, etc. It was a dizzying experience to say the least, but I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people including several board members. I met Charmy Harker and spoke with her several times. I met Wei Chang (WTCG) and ran into him several times as well. He is a great guy with a hilerious sense of humor. I purchased several coins for myself along the way. Nothing rare really, mostly common stuff and even a few darkside WWII German coins. I plan to post a full report later. Here is a photo of Glenn and I at his table. Many thanks to Glenn for the experience! I look forward to more shows in the future! >>
I appreciate the brief plug. I was at the show from Thursday until Saturday afternoon. A few dealers stated they had a pretty good show and sales results exceeded their expectations although most reported a mediocre show with decent wholesale sales and weak to non-existent retail sales. A handful of some of the better known dealers went so far as saying they didn't sell one single coin retail the whole time. Public attendance appeared weak on Thursday and while Saturday wasn't by any means deserted especially in the morning, attendance levels could have been stronger. Friday was the best attended day.
SecurePlus coins were slowly making their way onto the bourse floor. US Coins had a sizeable number of gold coins with SecurePlus available and a piece or two of various denominations were trickling their way into display cases. SecurePlus was available on as a Walkthrough service with PCGS.
Personally I was absolutely unimpressed with the venue, and the ANA could have selected a far better place to host an ANA convention. The convention center was drab and old and generally unappealing. Cellular coverage in the bourse room was very spotty, and internet and 3G coverage was virtually nonexistent, resulting in half of the dealers including myself making frequent trips to the sidewalk on Houston Street just to be able to talk on the phone. The Fort Worth city center area is largely uninteresting and a bit deserted at night. In my opinion the ANA blew it on their final decision.
Oh yeah, on Saturday morning on my way to the show I was thanked by local area law enforcement for stimulating the Metroplex economy with my presence by the gift of a speeding ticket. A big thanks to the ungrateful locals (apparently the term "jerks" is offensive to some people, but hey it's Texas and so is the term "evolution", but I digress).

I think you may want to edit that sentence from your post before people get a wrong impression of you.
