Need opinion on authenticity of 1795 $

JulianJulian Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭
A client sent me this and asked for my opinion. I told him that I would post it here for further examination.
Many thanx.

For what it's worth, that serial number doesn't match anything in the Heritage archive.

Without checking it against images of known-genuine examples, etc. .........at first glance, it looks very similar to a number of Chinese counterfeits I have seen. However, I think that the the spot to the left of "O" in "OF" on the reverse would be a departure from those counterfeits. I also strongly suspect that Julian already knows if the coin is good or not.image

The slab bothers me, I can't find a pic of another one with the "S$1" I only see "$1" on other PCGS slabbed early dollars.

Interesting, on ebay all are "$1" on Heritage most are "S$1."

I looked in the Heritage archives and the second one of that date/type I saw had "S$1" on the label. But the coin still looks off to me.

Is there any way to search Heritage's archives by cert # or do you just have to look through the past auctions at each holder?

Congratulations, doh, on your 6000th post. Just send me the coin in question for being first to congratulate you. Seriously, great job.

If the change in the plastic outlining the holder (what is normally just on the corners of a genuine slab) is in-hand as it appears in the photo, then the slab is no good.

Many thanx for your thoughts. Without the coin in hand, I was suspicious of the coin, but could not condemn it. I will suggest that he send the scan to PCGS for verification.

The holder gives me cause for pause.

I do not think the reverse hologram is correct for the front label.
(and it looks like a fake one at that)
The rev. hologram should be the one with a PNG logo not the NASDAQ:CLCT (that is what they use now) .

All the slabs I have that read "Series, Coin" have the PNG logo on the back. Can anyone concur? image

Looks like the Chinese counterfeit. Check for a small depression to the right of the base of the '5'
in the date, as well as two depressions on the throat towards the front. Many of these also show a
depressed line arcing from the eagle's wing to the right side of the eagle's head.

Actually, I don't like the look of it at all. The coin looks to be too perfectly round and centered for a coin of that era. Needless to say, I could always be incorrect in my judgement.

I'm convinced the coin and the slab are counterfeit/fake.

The coin's wrong, the slab's wrong, the font is wrong. It's FAKE. 100%.

Here's a photo of a fake slab. Notice the piece of plastic that you can see in the middle of the slab on the left and right side. The same thing can be seen on this slab.

The uniform toning suggest a counterfeight. I'm no expert.

Obviously I'm a newbie, but I must say the "stack points" in the middle on the "suspect slab" bear a strong resemblance to the fake one in the above comparison.
