Peace, I'm Out

What's up my fellow CU members? It's hard to believe that I've been here for almost 3.5 years now. My how time flys. But the time has come for me to say good bye for awhile.

It has dawned on me that I may have an internet/baseball card addiction. I just got chewed out at work for spending an incredible amount of time on the internet and most of the time is at card sites such as this (please no lectures, I know I was in the wrong) image. I am lucky in that I get to keep my job but it has got me thinking. Even after the yelling I really had to fight the urge to login and see if anything new had been posted. All I could think about is that maybe I have a new PM! I should login and find out! I wonder if Jake has picked up a new Campy or if Paul has stumbled onto Mirror Gold Ozzie Smith. Or maybe Ross has more information on his Frank Thomas NNOF thread. I could go on and on.

It saddens me that I have become so dependent on the internet and sportscards that it has affected everything in my life. It has abviously affected my work and if I don't get a handle on it soon it's going to affect my marriage and family life. And it's not worth that.

So I am taking a long break. I'm not quitting the hobby or selling my cards but tonight my cards are going in the safe and my wife is taking the key. I am going to logoff of the CU and the other sites that I frequent and will try everything in my power to resist the urge to check in. I'm sure there will be times that I cave but I hope those times are few and far between.

I have already made my plans to attend Nationals in Baltimore in August. And I wouldn't miss it for the world. Hopefully I will be in a better state of mind and able to meet some of you there.

Anyway. Thanks for all the good times CU. To all the friends that I have made on here, please keep in touch via e-mail, phone, or facebook. I want to know how you are doing, what new additions you've been able to aquire, etc. Cards come and go but friends and family are forever.

Peace. I'm out.

please keep in touch via e-mail, phone, or facebook

Isn't that just as addicting (more so for some people) as a message board?

It ain't going to be easy for you but it can be done and wish you and yours all the best.

I tried playing golf this weekend without smoking cigarettes (I'm not a regular smoker - only when I play golf once/week). I got so angry that I snapped my driver over my knee. Here's hoping your quitting goes better.

I should sit and reevaluate my standing as well. I am on this site so often that my wife says she would be less concerned if she caught me talking to girls online. I have to see if there are updates every hour or so. help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to go to support meetings. "Hello, my name is Tom and I am addicted to cards."

Seems like the priorities have gotten out of whack. My very best wishes to you in finding a new job that is more card collecting friendly. And its time to get the family involved too!

Seriously though...I hope this can give you time to put things in perspective. It's a hobby, it should be fun, not control you obsessively. Good luck!!!

Good luck Chris. You'll be happier in the end. I'll give you a yell sometime.

My score was a 41. Probably expected higher. In my defense, I'm only online for long periods of time when I'm home alone or my wife is asleep during daylight hours.

    Good luck Chris.

Take a break and come back later.

Oh, and my score was only 26.

But to Mike's point on smoking, I'm on day 44 of no chewing tobacco after an all day, every day habit of 21 years. Quitting sucks, and nothing makes it suck less.

    My score - 19.

I am on the internet daily, but hardly any of those things applied. If they did, it was only rarely or occasionally.

Congratulations, your score is: 40. I thought for sure it was going to tell me that I spend to much time online.
  • Best of luck.

One option you might want to consider when re-entering the hobby is the purchase of an IPhone. you can view the message board, read posts, check email and keep up to date all without having to log onto the web site on the computer. This can eliminate your need to go to these sites at work and dramatically reduce the amount of time at home. You can take a long bathroom break and be up to date on everything. The screen is small and it's tougher create long responses but it's a happy medium.

Sorry to see you go. Good folks leaving the board and folks with posts of questionable value continue to pollute our waters.

Hopefully you'll sort things out and revisit cards down the road. Until then, best of luck with everything

Good Luck Chris, I think I'm taking the same path. My desire for sports cards has diminish in the last month or so. Spending way to much money on cardboard.
