What if every coin was digitally "fingerprinted" so there could be no duplication without the coin being flagged?

How could this change the industry?

EDIT:
Welcome to GemprintTM

GemprintTM is the world's most sophisticated, non-invasive diamond identification and registration system. GemprintTM is rapidly becoming the global standard for diamond identification.

In December of 2005, GemprintTM was acquired by Collectors Universe, the leading provider of value-added authentication and grading services of high-value collectibles.

Who is going to pay for every coin to be digitally fingerprinted?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

seateddime or anybody else that requests it. Of course not for "every" coin, only there's. (whoops! theirs)

But then the question also needs to be asked: "Why?"
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

A 3d digital scanner (laser) takes about 5 minutes to scan a coin. Plus the imput
on ownership, etc. Good idea but how can it be done with the amount of coins
being graded, day in and day out. Not enough time in the day.

Perhaps technology will improve and the times will drop but that's a ways off, I think.

It might work fine for the classic coins, might be a litttle more difficultt for MS/PR70simage

They would have to take the surface imperfections and log them into a specific repeatable format, then you can easily have a searchable database.

Even if you could do it, wouldn't that discourage resubmissions?

Coins are massed-produced, assembly line items. Unlike diamonds (and snowflakes) they are not unique.
Coins change over time - tarnish (aka, toning) changes.

As usual, a patent just gives you a right to litigate. If the idea gains traction in the market, look for someone else to claim prior art.

If the coin is encapsulated, you could actually develop a bacterial signature for the coin that would be 100% unique. This is the latest technology and I'm sure many have heard of it augmenting criminal investigations. Why? Humans only have on the high side 4% of the bacteria in common within their bodies that then next human has. Your left hand and your right hand only have 17% in common. The human body has several times more bacterial cells than human cells and this makes this hot in security.

    Friggin germs. Weird, huh?

I posted that idea a couple weeks ago on the main thread

but what are you talking about - duplication?

Just for the sake of clarity, this is an application, not yet a patent, and if/when a patent should issue, the examiner will have cleared it on all "prior art."

I sorta think that anything can be duplicated or cloned; currency, coins, slabs, DNA, digital fingerprints, etc.

will this help the collectors, the counterfeiters, or the grading services?

this is a great idea, too bad not in HRHs thread

could have been worth a dime
