Can I get some feedback regarding Ebay sellers that put a price on the slab/flip etc...

Do you feel as if you are getting a deal if you win the item for less than whats on the slab/flip?
Do you feel like you are overpaying if it goes for more than whats on the slab?
Is there an advantage for the seller to do this? Perhaps baiting the buyer into bidding more?
I have been seeing more of this lately and was wondering what some other members think.
Thank you in advance!

Whether they allow it or not, sellers are doing it.

The seller cwtguy routinely has stickers with prices on his slabs. I never asked him why he does that, but there does not appear to be any relationship between the price on the slab and what the coins sell for. If the price is what he paid for the coin, sometimes he wins and sometimes he loses. Personally, I think some of the prices on his slabs are outdated and low.

The price is not relevant as to what I bid for the coin. It's all about the coin and not what's written on the holder.

Interesting that this topic is being discussed. I find it deceptive, but probably not illeagal, advertising. It appears the seller is creating the impression that the coin is valued more than the "BIN/Make an Offer" price and thereby enticing the unsuspecting. I move right along if I see this form of advertsing.

However, I would love to hear from sellers who emply this type of strategy.

I agree. Nearly all of his slabs have prices on them. And where does he get all those tokens from anyway?.....lol He has some nice ones.

Generally speaking, I think a seller is far more likely to include a price that is too high, as opposed to too low. I would ignore it and focus on the coin and what you think it should sell for, regardless of what price might be included.

I agree, I really like the things he has. I have bought a few. He told me he has assembled some coins that used to be owned by Brett Palser, who was a researcher and collector of CWT's who was associated with Rick Snow just prior to his untimely passing.

  • For me the desire is older flips/holders with the original old price on it, or a value written in by the collector. It helps show the relative value of a coin/series over the decades. Also shows how a much that particular coin was worth to an individual collector, adds sort of a non-specific provenance. You can find original prices on flips from just a few years ago with prices on the flip that were exhorbitant for the coin (a circulated 1964 Kennedy for $4.00) that are now below melt!

Of course the recent price stickers are for entertainment purposes only...

  • As a business owner I can say this. Not every coin dealer is going to take the coin out of a 2x2 or some other holder, just so they can not show a price they have on the coin. It if is a sticker on a slab, then they might also leave it as it is double inventory. Store front and on ebay. I find it very wasteful to be changing holders all the time. Just some food for thought!
  • Stickers/prices make it seem a good deal for novice bidders because they are bidding on a "high-priced" coin and are buying it cheap compared to the sticker, even though the stickers are inflated.

Bingo. The psychology of getting a good deal or bargain.

Exactly....in most cases I agree......but when it's like a store sticker attached to the back then in a lot of cases it's just becuase the seller is to lazy to try to peal it off. I have to admit I am guilty of that and I believe one or two coins I am selling right now have a price written on the back sticker....but I would be shocked if the coins went that cheap image
  • Hi There,

Wisde words from Perry and CoinGuy back there! I agree! Who cares what is on the sticker - I barely care what is on the other slips/stickers etc. I am paying and I am collecting - I gotta live with this stuff. So I use my own criterion. Always have. That simple.

Coins seem to be the ONLY exception on eBay where no represention of the value can be made unless the coin is slabbed by an "approved partner" grading service. Ebay at one time demanded that the DENOMINATION be photoshopped out, lest someone think that a Mercury Dime was worth one dime without it being slabbed. After numerous complaints and explanations by the ANA, they seem to have given up on ending auctions where the photo shows various old prices/ price codes/stock numbers/ VAM numbers/ Lot numbers/ Breen numbers (anything that MIGHT be a value to their experienced numismatic staff in Mumbai) Best advice is to ignore any markings or labels. Many dealers get boxes of coins on memo which have various old prices on them, and the dealer cannot repackage those items and still have a return privilege, and it's a hassel to try and crop out all the markings on a 2x2 (and then people accuse you of hiding something by doing so)

It seems funny, but certain eBay dealers have shown prices on 2x2's etc. for years and I don't know if eBay ever said anything to them, but if so they never did anything about it. And they're almost always high.

I believe he was one of three or so dealers who bought a huge collection a couple of years ago, also has dealt in tokens for a good while.
