Somebody thought this raw eBay Morgan was something special

I sniped this one. I know it's just a scan, but what is it about this silver dollar that drove the cost past MS65 money?

I know why I bid what I did, but there had to be at least a couple of underbidders who had their reasons.
(I thought it was going to close at closer to $100. rather than what it did in other words.)

If it's anything super special I wouldn't mention it until you have it in hand.

I think it's AT enhanced over a less NT base.

Today it's an instant BB for QT at PCGS...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Really? Perhaps you're right.
    How about a gentlemen's bet?

And Leon, I doubt it's really anything other than a nicely toned mid-grade Morgan. I don't think the seller really left any money on the table.

    You think it's PL?
  • I think the scans make the coin look like it has a lot of potential and that's a coin I would have bid on however I wouldn't have bid that much on a guess even if I was pretty sure the coin would be nice. Looks like a 63 or 64 based on what little I can see so if it has monster color then you will make out fine whether it's PL or not. I assume it's the typical early S mint semi-PL but you never know.

    Mark,
I don't think it's PL but I do, based on my reading of scans (vs photos) is the coin sports luster. Color and luster over MS64'ish- possibly Gem surfaces is a killer combination for me.

We'll see though. I may be just barking at the moon.

I’ve seen a few Tiparillo enhanced Morgans in my day, if it weren’t for the blue, well good luck, hope it’s a killer coin.

    Thanks Shane,
I also picked up an interesting Peace dollar from the same seller last night. They'll both be going into PCGS. This seller generally doesn't sell coins- or at least that is not his primary focus. His scanner doesn't look like it's been tweeked.

Remember the days of eBay after they first started? Many coins didn't have anything but a description but then the scanner came along. I got pretty good at reading them- knowing they can be brutal on lustrous toned coins.
    We'll see.
To me it was worth the gamble.

  • I have made a lot of money interpreting bad scans of good coins....and I know I am not alone. Most folks won't see what we see and I am happy about that as we don't need the competition image Please post an updated image when you get the coin....the reverse has me intrigued image

    Will do.
(And, I agree with your curiosity regarding the reverse.)

If the reverse toning is like similar ones I have seen, I think you will be very happy.

I can't wait to see your pics

as I can interpret your pics better than extrapolate off of the sellers pic
