Another good counterfeit at the coin shop.

Well, I stopped by the local coin store and the dealer presented me with another very well made counterfeit. A bust half in VF, weighs correctly, wear pattern is good, however the color is SLIGHTLY off. The edge lettering was fair, but on closer observation, had slight problems with globs of metal within the words. In addition, when the coin was pinged, the metal sound was off. Good counterfeit for the grade and would pass for most beginning collectors.

The dealer tells me he is getting offered ALL SORTS of counterfeits these day.

Presented to me for an opinion.

It is sad that people do such things. What a world we live in.

The coin appeared to be artificially worn down.

Do you have photos to share? It would be interesting.
I have seen so many colors of bust halfs, that it is hard to think that would be the final indicator.
Do you know how it was made?
Is it a modern or contemporary work ?

It may be a contemporary counterfeit struck in German silver and it circulated long enough to get worn down some. A pic would sure help. Right now all we can do is guess.

The coin doesn't belong to me and resides with a coin dealer. The coin definitely had the look of German Silver and was initially convincing; however, with all the chinese counterfeits coming out, I am just wondering if this a new twist to the ongoing supply of fake coins with a good collector "look".

Was it a caped bust half? At the time they circulated, quite a few base metal counterfeits we made and put in circulation. There is a refernce book on this subject listing all known contemporary CBH counterfeits. This coin may be listed in this book.
