Got dreck?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
Take this simple test

1. Have you ever won a coin sight-unseen in a Heritage auction?

2. Do you try always to find the lowest price example?

3. Is putty something that the other guy is worried about?

4. Is bright right?

5. Do you look at the holder before you look at the coin?

6. Do you look at the price tag before you look at the coin?

7. Will you buy anything if the price is right?

8. Would you pass on something that you really want if it is 5% more than you are willing to pay?

9. Do dealers often pass on your coins when you try to sell to them at shows?

10. Do dealers actually grimace when they see your coins gor sale?

Score one point for each "yes" answer and two points if you answered "yes" to #10

If you scored zero, you are unlikely to have dreck.

If you scored 1 point or greater, you are likely to have dreck. image

I have no dreck, IMO. Scored a ZERO.

Eye appeal is way important to me.

But I also consider a 5 dollar error coin not be dreck if it is a nice example and it fits into my error "type set"

I am always amazed that for a lot on this forum price is no object, being a prudent buyer does mean you buy dreck, it means that you do not overpay just because you want something. Being a smart buyer can often lead to a much nicer coin . I would sure like to find out what it feels like to pay whatever for a coin just because I want it. Yes folks a coin does have a value and just because a person is willing to overpay does not make that the coins value.

Again with the dreck discussion. I have a number of coins that belonged to relatives
from the 1800's -- most of them are less than pristine. However, they are loaded with
history, being a tangible connection with another era. I will pass them along to my
children or grandchildren, along with the stories I have heard about them. Who knows,
perhaps a new collector or two will emerge.

Anyone want to condemn these pieces as "dreck?" If so, why would you do that?

That describes the first 10 years of my coin collecting existence. I never paid full book value for anything. In fact, I would not go over greysheet bid on most things. image

I would pay the right price for anything...then sell it. Other than that, I would say I score a 0. I am also very keen on not overpaying for items, but this rule is always relative. I will pay multiples of the price guides for many bust quarters and I see it as a good deal, but I will not pay full PCGS price for any washington quarter, so it changes depending on what I am looking at.

Let's get to the bottom of what "dreck" means.

If by "dreck" some are trying to describe an over graded coin then I say please choose another word as "dreck" in this use doesn't make sense.

    "
    dreck
       /drɛk/ Show Spelled[drek] Show IPA
    –nounSlang.
    1.
    excrement; dung.
    2.
    worthless trash; junk.
    Use dreck in a Sentence
    See images of dreck
    Search dreck on the Web
    Also, drek.

    Origin:
1920–25; < Yiddish drek; c. G Dreck filth; cf. OE threax, ON threkkr excrement
    "

If by "dreck" you mean a junk, worthless coins then yes I probably do have some.

As well as collecting higher grade coins I occasionally buy cheaper or worthless coins if I like the design or the history attached to them.
Say at car boot sales etc. and I don't really care if I make a profit or loss on them. In fact I sometimes give them away for free to friends, family or my nephew if they show interest in them.

Since starting to collect my individual coin budget has gone up but we all have to start somewhere and one man's dreck is another man's treasure.

"Google" the word, dreck, under the images section and check out the first image on the list. The word Dreck has no place in describing any coin and whoever started up using this term in describing coins.... image
