What if Anaconda's Prediction is right..........

And PCGS starts using half grades? It happened with PSA (sports cards) and many collectors left the market. What do you think will happen with the coin market? image

  • Why would people leave a hobby for that reason? it sounds like they were just looking for a reason to get out. If they go to half grades I would just deal with it, shouldn't affect how I enjoy my coins and tokens.image

I'm not advocating a half grade system.

I think you answered your own question. Thank god that PCGS would not be that stupid.

    ...using half grades?

In that case, half of all of the previously graded coins would be likely upgrades. In which case, everyone wins! image

I feel the sports cards, which I did collect, were lost due to many different companies trying to make
too many special issue cards. If everything turns into a unique card what do you collect?

Well with sports cards, it was all with older cards, not new ones. So basically if you have a card graded 2.0 and are trying to sell it, a dealer could hagle with you that it was really a 1.5, and you could say its a 2.5 etc. In the long run it hurt vintage collector confidence with the grading system, and their investments could drop with the new grading system.

Obviously coin collecting has been going on FAR longer than card collecting, so there are many more experts and collectors who have been in the business for a LONG time. They will most likely not be affected. I think the new collectors may be forced out when buying raw or overgraded coins.

Well hopefully none of it will happen, we will have to wait and see.

So lets think again hypothetically. A coin is purchased from a highly reputable dealer as a 65. You agree the coin is a 65, and you pay strong money for it. Now for some rare coins, we all know there can be a HUGE price difference between a 64 and a 65. You submit the coin. PCGS does think its nice, but not exactly a 65, but its also not bad enough to be a 64. So you have a 64.5. Now how will these coisn be valued? An average of a 64 and 65? In that case, the collector will lose a decent amount of money. Now you can say a way to avoid this is buy graded coins already. But if this new system is put into place, I think the crossovers will drop drastically. I would rather have a 64 than a 63.5 imho.

look up the price for 1925-S dollars in MS64 and MS65. Holders of nice ms64 coins will pay a fee to have it certified MS64.5.

people won't submit coins for this tier of service if the potential gain in value doesn't justify it,,, actually, I take that back, people certify coins now that aren't worth it... it will be a boon to PCGS> lots of folks will submt for more "accurate" grading.

And this will take alot of business away from CAC ,which is what I would want if I were PCGS.

Wouldn't this be more of a from now on sorta thing? There is a lot of dreck that wouldn't or shouldn't get resubmitted. What would happen with their grade guarantee? What if your 65 came back a 64.5? Would they pony up the difference?

half grades or anything which would be a change in the scale now in use would be illogical for PCGS to do. while it might affect marketing and pricing drastically it wouldn't necessarily generate a substantial increase in PCGS revenue. that's pretty much a given, isn't it, that this change(although it might "revolutionize" things) will mean more money for PCGS?? why else would they be doing anything and hyping it at their chatroom??

Why start using half grades when plenty of the scale gets little or no use now?

I'll refrain from any half wit remarks.
