Is there any premium for a 1921 VAM-1J Peace (R-5), or are they common enough relative to the demand that there is no markup?

Yes, that is it (not to be confused with VAM-1E2, which has a similar gouge)

PCGS does not attribute this particular VAM.

Don't think so. As far as I know, only the VAM 3 has much of a premium.
