  Bill Noyes: US Large Cents, two volumes 1793-1814 and 1816-1839. These cost about $300 for the set, but are well done and worth it.

  Also, Jack Robinson's CQR (latest is 19th edition) is indispensable for the serious collector. It covers all dates and known varieties in most grades, providing both rarity and rough valuation. This costs $35 available from most copper dealers at shows. Jack also sells these directly.
  
  Joining EAC is a bargain, you get the Pennywise.

  The Noyes' books are $250 for both, with shipping from Charles Davis.
  ...and, if you want to do the late dates, the book is "The Die Varities of United States Large Cents 1840-1857"
  by John R. Grellman (Bob). You can buy it from the man himself: ljefferys@cfl.rr.com, $100 postpaid, autographed
  upon request.
  Also, join Early American Coppers (www.eacs.org).
  The best piece of advice that I can give you (other than the usual-'buy the book.....')
  is to decide what you want to collect within the realm of large cents. The series is so
  long and there are so many die varities. You may want to pick a year, like 1803, and
  do a Sheldon set. Or a classic head set, etc.

  I would also add that auction catalogs of major large cent collections are very useful as well. Pics, variety attribution, coins graded by the TPGs and the EAC grades are usually given, to give you a feel for differences, along with Rarity info, pedigree info, etc.

  Thanks for all the info everyone.. WOW, sounds a bit more involved than I was guessing.
  I think the books are a good starting point... I didnt realize how many varieties were involved..
