Cardinal's half disme is ... well..... adjectives fail me.......MS-68???
<< <i>nice one, SkyMan, but I don't do the seated attributions, that's MrHalfDime's forte
Very clever and very funny...............what a great thread..............MJ
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>cardinal, I got to inspect that one at the ANA a couple years back. Quite a treat! >>

Thanks! The half disme is one that really needs to be viewed in person to fully appreciate it. When you hold it in your hands and turn it in the light, you can really see the bright rainbow toning and the incredibly intense luster that just can't be captured with the camera. When Jim Halperin examined it at the 2007 ANA show, he grinned from ear to ear and exclaimed "Wow, the reverse is a 69!" This from the guy who David Hall has named as the single best grader in the business! I also had the opportunity to meet the guy behind the Knoxville Collection at the show. He told me he had compared this coin side-by-side with the Starr coin (which PCGS has graded as Specimen-67) to decide which one to buy for the collection, and his conclusion was that this coin was, hands down, far superior.

for those that do not remember, the cartoon is Cladiator's work. I forget the copyright date
cardinal: 1792 LM-1 (one die pair known for the year, makes it easy!)
LeeG: 1835 LM-4
Matt's 1837 no stars HD is gorgeous. One of my favorite coin designs... no clutter obverse!
Appreciate Cardinal's additional history on the half disme.. I guess we can say that one's "JH approved" like you see on some of the coins at Heritage
I'm sure that coin has a long and distinguished pedigree.. there's probably a book written about it somewhere.

Thanks Barndog!
My opinion is that their coins in-hand often look far nicer than they do on their website.
Their website pics often look a bit drab.....they need some help in that area.

the coins I have seen in hand have demonstrated far most luster than the pics would have me believe.
