User names - where does your name come from?

I've been curious for awhile as to how some people chose the names that they have. Some are obvious as famous characters (Walter Sobchak for instance) or from fandom (FavreFan1971 for instance), but others are just a mystery. How did you choose yours?

For me, I started playing an online game about 12 years ago and needed a nickname. I had just finished watching a Steven Wright comedy special and one of the jokes was "I just invented powdered water. I just haven't figured out what to mix it with yet." I thought it was funny, so I used it. The game had enough spaces for 12 letters, so PowderedH2O it was, and still is in a million other places. Any others?

    Kinda the same thing...

Mine is actually is derived from an old name I used in an online game. From that name, people started calling me B.Z. Right around that time, Puff Daddy changed his stage name to P. Diddy to make it easier (or better) for his fans. So, in tribute, I changed my online name to B. Ziddy, to make it easier/better for *my* fans.

In 1999, when I was registering for eBay, it asked me for a user name. I thought about it for about five seconds and entered the first hobby-related term that came to mind. Like some childhood nickname, it stuck.

  • Sooners - The term Sooners was used to describe settlers who entered the Unassigned Lands, located in the current state of Oklahoma, before President Grover Cleveland officially proclaimed them open to settlement with the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889 on March 2, 1889. The name derived from the "sooner clause" of the Indian Appropriation Act, which stated that no one should be allowed to enter and occupy the land prior to the opening time and that such people would be denied rights to illegally claimed land. Sooners were often deputy marshals, land surveyors, railroad employees, and others who were able to legally enter the territory early. Some sooners crossed into the territory illegally at night and were originally called "moonshiners" because they entered "by the light of the moon." These sooners would hide in ditches at night and suddenly appear to stake their claim after the land run started, hours ahead of legal settlers.

Cowboy - A cowboy is an animal herder who tends cattle on ranches in North America, traditionally on horseback, and often performs a multitude of other ranch-related tasks. The historic American cowboy of the late 19th century arose from the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico and became a figure of special significance and legend.

    Well you asked.image

But another answer could have been Oklahoma Sooners Dallas Cowboys

ok, here's the real story, please ignore what i wrote two years ago. image

when i was trying to decide on a clever name for my eBay seller account, i settled on "touch-em-all" or some such variation because i had grown up listening to L.A. sports radio and that was Dick Enberg's classic call for a homer.....i had also considered "she-is-gone" by Scully, but........then i discovered that Garth Brooks was already plastering the world with the Enberg slogan thanks to his foundation, so i decided on the classic call of a homer from ESPN Radio's Dan Shulman. image

My name is Shane Hardie (with an "ie" at the end). I have a younger brother named Phil. We were a pretty good tandem on the basketball court. People called us "The Hardie Boys". Growing up, I used to read "The Hardy Boys" books. The oldest Hardy Boy was named Frank Hardy. I just sort of put those two things together and came up with "frankhardy".

As most can imagine, I'm a little off the wall. When I first started setting up at shows in the early 1980's, I was pretty retentive about centering and condition. A few of the dealers used to say I was off the wall about how closely I scrutinized what I bought and what I asked for "premium" condition cards (I recall one dealer giving me all sorts of grief when I was asking $7.50 for a dead centered and razor sharp Steve Carlton RC). Anyway, off the wall seemed to fit and I liked the sports connotations with regard to baseball, so I went with the name, "Off The Wall" Cards and used it for my AOL account when they had the shorter names so I had to contract it to: OTWCards. I ended up using it for just about everything from all of the email providers to the business to a website.
