newp - 1795 German State - Wurzburg medal

I have been hyped up waiting for this to arrive. It is a sede vacante medal from the German state of Wurzburg. It is approx 45 mm in size and was struck to commenorate the death of Franz Ludwig von Erthal, the Bishopric of Wurzburg. The reverse features Madonna and child over Kilianus, Colonatus and Totnanus in clouds.

The reference to Kilianus, Colonatus and Totnanus have a significance in the history of the city. St. Kilianus was an Irish monk who became the first bishop of the city of Wurzburg in central Germany, and Colonatus and Totnanus were both his disciples. All were martyred on the 8th of July in 689 after Kilianus tried to convert a local Frank to Christianity. Legend holds that the local Frank became enraged after Kilianus advised him to divorce his wife (previously his brothers wife), resulting in the assasination of all 3 evangelicals from Ireland.

Wow! That's a nice pickup image

Is it listed in any taler references, or is it considered a wholly separate medallic issue?

    Thanks Spoon!

While it is almost exactly the size of a taler, it is technically considered to be a medal. I have been tracking these pieces using the Zepernick classification system; this particular piece is Zepernick 263.

Zepernick wrote a guide published in the early 1820s entitled "K.F. DIE CAPITELS- UND SEDISVACANZMÜNZEN DER DEUTSCHEN ERZ-, HOCH- UND MITTELBAREN REICHSSTIFTER", which is loosley the empty seat coins of the German states. (sorry for the butchering of german to our german friends). This book classifies all sede vacante pieces across the german states from the 1600s through the early 1800s. I have several talers that are also featured in the book. One day I will find a copy of the book to add to the collection.....

Hmm... published in the 1820s? ... no copyright! I bet if you can find a copy in the holdings of one of the libraries participating in the Google Books or other such scanning projects we might be able to get them to add it to the queue image

Edit - didn't find it in any US libraries, though the search isn't exhaustive, but there are plenty in overseas holdings...
