<< <i>Question #4 What is the Oreville List

Oreville is a gentleman who gave his "top 20" suggested buys for the near future.

Here they are:

My list of 20 coin winners in 1999:

(1)All washington quarters in PCGS MS-67 dated 1932-1938.

(2)All standing liberty quarters in MS-67 FH (very undervalued)

(3)All seated liberty coins in MS-67 and MS-68.

(4)All barber dimes in MS-67 and MS-68 and PR-68.

(5)All key 20th century error coins in MS-65 (and if red must be PCGS) and better.

(6)All IHC red cents in PCGS MS-66 and better. PCGS MS-65 and better in the 1870's and PCGS or NGC MS-65 in the 1860's.

(7)All MS-65 and better buffalo nickels EXCEPT the 1938-D.

(8)All mercury dimes in PCGS MS-67 FSB except in the 1940's.

(9)Any Morgan Dollar in MS-65 DMPL. Must be PCGS.

(10)Wheat Lincoln cents in MS-65 red or better. Rolls are too cheap.

11)Washington quarters of the early 1980's. impossible to find in MS-66 or better.

(12)Franklin halves in PCGS MS-66 FBL or better.

(13)Flying Eagle cents in VG or better.

(14)1856 FE cent in red MS-65.

(15)Gold- a tough one. All MS-62 liberty $20's other than the 1904.

(16)ALL 18th century coinage in XF or better.

(17)1902-O Morgan Dollars in MS-65.

(18)Liberty Walking Halves 1916 to 1921 in MS-66 or better.

(19)1926-S lincoln cent PCGS MS-65 red.

(20)The best of all: true XF to AU mercury and liberty walking halves of any date if you can get them at slightly more than silver prices!!!!!!!!!

Please note the last one will be the most FUN!!!!!

Horrible advice, but good news. I'm here to bail you out at your cost for any coin you bought back then from the list!

Actually that is quite a good list....
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

With the exception to number 5 these were kind of no-brainers.

The 1999 market pretty much was just recovering from being in the toilet for the better part of 8-9 years so finding top coins that would appreciate was akin shooting ducks in the water. Gem 20th and late 19th century dated, gem bust, barber, seated always works as markets are turning around. I can't think of too many areas other than classic commems, MS Morgans and Peace dollars that didn't do really well from 1999-2008. But in totality your list was pretty good as you clearly identified the coming rush in gem 20th century REG sets, the never-ending demand for DMPL's, and most importantly identifying how underrated $20 Libs in MS were...esp. with gold being in the dumper and the stock market still flying at 100,000 feet. But where was your list of the top 20 coins to sell immediately in July 2008? lol.

Good job. Too bad I didn't see it until 11 years later. image

Some big winners for sure, the junk silver, and red Indian cents amongst others. However, you also managed to select one of the absolute worst categories as well Franklins in FBL are down 50% to 90% based on auction results.

In any case, for many of the top pops, the quality of the individual coin(s), and the price paid would be more indicative of financial results than the category that coin was in. Many of those coins would upgrade today, and the price appreciation would be more than indicated.

nothing like a " list of 20 " with hundreds of coins on it.

that said, they did pretty well overall. the flying eagles cents in VG stand out as ???
