I bought this coin a couple days ago,but do not have it in hand yet.I realize there are some pvc spots on the coin, but I think they can be easily removed by giving the coin an acetone bath.(I HOPE!)Do you see any other problems which would keep it from grading?Click on the pic to enlarge them.Edited to add that I bought the coin.

  • I'm on the fence with this one. With that much active PVC on such a clean coin it makes me think the pvc was caused from a previous bad dipping job. It almost looks like pvc was once on the coin before based on the black spots most notably at 9 o'clock and some more at 5 o'clock on the obverse. This is just what I personally think - I honestly may have no idea what I'm talking about image

The 75-S is relatively common as Trade dollars go; I'd wait for one you are sure is problem-free.

Not knowing too much about the series I'd say yes it's uncirculated and it will grade Genuine.

I can't assess the coin very well from those pics, but if it's just PVC, then give it a long acetone bath and it should be fine (i.e. will grade).

Sorry, Tennessee Dave, I misread your original post. I suspect that even with an acetone bath it will still not grade. It may come back as Genuine - cleaned.

Too many parallel lines for me to think they are polishing lines. I suspect it's been
cleaned but who knows until you see it in hand. Can you return if you don't like?

I'm guessing the acetone bath may make the hairlines more visible....kind of a catch 22 coin.
I don't know what affect that will have on the gradeability - I've seen plenty of lightly cleaned Trade and Seated dollars in slabs with scattered light hairlines, etc. But if they are heavy, they will bag it.

Depending on what you paid and what is worth to you, and if you wanted it in a holder, I would give serious consideration to sending it to NCS. They can conserve the surfaces for you and it acceptable will send it to NGC for encapsulation and if not put it in a genuine holder. Your call to make on that one.
