Newp: 1822 dime, key date of CBDs

And no its not the fake one on ebay discussed in a thread here yesterday! image

I won this in a recent Heritage auction, and it is by far and away the most I've ever spent on a coin. I have now managed to acquire THE key date of Capped Bust Dimes, which is the series I've been actively collecting for about two years now. For those that don't know, the 1822 dime is considered to be an R-4 coin as a date with about 200 or so known examples, most of which are nowhere near as beautiful as this piece, IMO. However, numerous mint state examples are abound, but these are well into 5 figures. Meanwhile, most circulated examples I've seen are AG3 or lower and look like crap, so a decent circulated one is truly a rarity. I consider myself very lucky to have come across it at this time. NGC has graded it G4, but I'm sure it could go G6 at either service if resubmitted.

The coin itself has that gorgeous orange-gray, well circulated, crusty look to it. The set I'm building is all low to mid grade examples (so that it can be affordable and still a challenge), and WOW this fits in perfectly and is definitely the highlight of it so far. Enjoy!

And is it just me or do the dies appear to be rotated a bit? About 10-15 degrees maybe?

Nice! I think you got a good deal on it too. I liked it much better then the other PCGS coins that were sold earlier.

shouldnt it be in a genuine holder for scratched?
may the fonz be with you...always...
  • Nice circ with a really nice patina. The light scratches dont bother me in the least as finding any circ type coin in the lower ranges of ag to fine without a pinhole, rimtick or scratch is near impossible.

    Nice grab.

Theres one on ebay right now ( 160409353407) but I'm on the line as to whether its a 1823 or 22 as the seller also states. He's not too far away from my shop and I know him a little so I might mosey over there tommorow.

I dont know much bout em just that Ive never owned one image

It's a beautiful coin and obviously quite tough.

the scratch is barely noticeable in hand, but either way the coin is rare enough that the grading services will slab it. check some auction archives and you will find many examples that are much more beat up, yet still in holders image

Nice! Tough coin. Glad you found one that meets your requirements. The rest of the set should be a downhill ride from here.

I've been on the lookout for several years for a nice example and I haven't found one....yet. I've learned to throw away the sheet for this date. Great pick up! As for the scratch...I'm sure the image magnifies it and on a key date in that condition it's perfectly acceptable and not distracting.

Better than the one I just sold on eBay.

Shottaker, I wouldn't take a shot on the one on eBay (9160409353407). It is a 23, imo. Note the difference in the tops of the 2 and the 3, the 3 is more closed. Compare to the OP's.
  • Not bad detail for the grade given. The color looks good, and the strike looks decent too. The scratch kills it for me 100%, mostly due to it looking new. The way the coin is angled makes it stand out I think, but its so sharp in relation to everything else, it seems new. And, if its new, it shouldnt have graded. The fact that its on a major focal point too hurt it alot. Im not in the crowd that give key dates breaks when theres issues like this. Id rather really scrutinize these types of coins. A grade is a grade, and a coin is a certain grade or not. That simple. Im not saying the issue isnt within tolerances of the grade range, just giving my view.

The skin overall looks great though and if it floats your boat, thats all that matters.

So why aren't you going on to Rich Uhrich's site and buy one if it is still available, he has had a couple lately? >>

He does have a couple listed, but I would far from call either of those a nice example:

Very true, the 2 he currently he has are damaged. I think he still has the pic up of a PCGS VF25 he sold like a year ago...I missed that coin sadly and it's a BEAUT!

I don't collect bust dimes, but hell, even I called Rich Uhrich about that PCGS VF-25 (OGH) he had listed a while back. I too learned that I was too late.

If that scratch is relatively new, is that an example of a $1000 staple?image

Not a new scratch, and perfectly fine for a low grade coin -- more of a "line" than a "scratch". It doesn't "kill" the coin at all.
  • Really? Looks very new. So do the few light hits on the rev.

But, I dont have it in hand.image As long as you like it, thats all that matters.

Super nice pickup! Do you think you might submit it to PCGS and get it out of the gawdawful edgeview holder? image I personally hate those holders. I liked the old style holder, but the edgeviews, not so much. They really hinder photography. image

    Either way, beautiful piece! Congratulations!
