Has anyone been to the Stack's office in NYC lately?

I am at a meeting at an undisclosed location on West 44th Street in NYC. I know that a venerable numismatic institution (Stack's) is a short limo ride away. Has anyone been there lately? I might have some time but I am not sure if it will be worth getting over there. Any chance of seeing QDB working the counter if I just gawk through the window?

I have been there once or twice over the last couple of months. It might be worthwhile but likely not. I say that because you might be able to view lots for the upcoming auction. If that is not the case, I would not go.

Ask the limo driver to take you to Wolfeboro if you want to see QDB. And don't forget to stop for some Grey Poupon on the way. image

Is that a checkered yellow limo ? Wear your seatbelt.
  • Longacre;
The principal people are already in Baltimore getting ready for the pre show auction. I don't imagine you would get to see Dave Bowers in New York, behind a counter or otherwise. He is easily accessible at Baltimore when the show starts. Just look for him at the Stack's table.

My New York office is on 56th and 6th and a short stroll over to Stacks which I would take whenever in NYC. However, that place gives me the creeps and sets off my all OCD and ADD alarms within 50 feet of the joint. image. I also live in fear that somebody will swat my hand with an umbrella or and old catalog for trying to touch something.............

Once, in New Orleans (pre-Katrina), I hunted down Harry Anderson's magic shop in the French Quarter. It was late at night. The shop was closed, but --- I couldn't believe my eyes! --- through the tinted yellow glass panes of the front door, I saw Harry Anderson himself practicing card tricks at the counter. I reached through the iron grill and knocked on the windowpanes. He was completely absorbed in his work, moving cards around on the counter. I knocked again. My traveling companion actually said something like, "Let's get outta here," which made me feel like one of the Little Rascals playing a prank on the schoolteacher. Finally he noticed (or stopped ignoring) my rapping, and he came to the door --- madder than a wet hen. "I'm busy, and I have a show to perform tomorrow night. I need to concentrate on my work!" I was mortified. But at the same time, it was very cool --- actually being yelled at by the judge from Night Court!

Yes do so. I was there last month and enjoyed looking at their selection. They helped me with my type set. It was very much worth the trip. Just ignore the chaos at the far left of the store.

  • I stopped in about three weeks ago. I was thoroughly ignored by everyone (except the security guard). After about 5 minutes of looking at the display cases, I left. No one greeted me, asked to help, or said a single word. BTW - it was not busy - there was one customer. Also, I was not exactly dressed like a homless person, either. Worst customer service experience ever.

    a short limo ride away

What's the carbon footprint of a short limo ride vs. walking?

A guy who lived around here used to buy from Stacks in NYC in the late 1930's. I was talking to him one day and he began to tell me that he once won an auction there for an 09-S VDB for like $12 (in the 30's or early 40's). After the auction was over, one of the owners took him to their inventory room "in the back" and offered him as many 09-S VDB's as he wanted for like 6 bucks each.......he said there was hundreds of them on a table stacked on top of each other like cordwood.

The guy I knew was born in 1909. He didn't go into any detail with his collection, but when asked what he collected, he told me "he had them all". He as since passed away and his collection left to his son or sons in the NorthEast somewhere.

That has been my experience every single time whether dressed head to toe in Dior or in flip flops and shorts and everything in between. With Longacre I suspect they would sniff out old Connecticut money and rose pedals would be thrown at his Gucci loafersimage.............MJ

Why not just visit with QDB at the Baltimore show. Surely "The Man" will excuse you from a secret meeting or two to attend!

(PS: My Tiffany's holdings have done well since you got the promotion and Mrs. L. was allowed to shop there again! But – the lovely lady really needs a new coat. That chinchilla she wears for errands is looking dusty.)

You should walk there, it is a beautiful day today in NYC.

I'd probably only go to Stack's to look at auction lots....which are all out of town. Check out the ANS instead. They'll show you anything you want, with an appointment.

I was there about ten years ago or so... I would arrange for your driver to arrange a tour through the older Jazz Clubs in the Village or go to the Guggenheim

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I actually walked by that place a few times last year venturing between Central Park & Times Square, but never walked inside...
Do you need an appointment ???

Wow! Business must be really good if they can afford to treat customers like that. If I saw something that interested me, I would have yelled in a very loud voice "Hey! Is anyone working here!" just to get their attention.
