Newp: 1822 dime, key date of CBDs
And no its not the fake one on ebay discussed in a thread here yesterday!
I won this in a recent Heritage auction, and it is by far and away the most I've ever spent on a coin. I have now managed to acquire THE key date of Capped Bust Dimes, which is the series I've been actively collecting for about two years now. For those that don't know, the 1822 dime is considered to be an R-4 coin as a date with about 200 or so known examples, most of which are nowhere near as beautiful as this piece, IMO. However, numerous mint state examples are abound, but these are well into 5 figures. Meanwhile, most circulated examples I've seen are AG3 or lower and look like crap, so a decent circulated one is truly a rarity. I consider myself very lucky to have come across it at this time. NGC has graded it G4, but I'm sure it could go G6 at either service if resubmitted.
The coin itself has that gorgeous orange-gray, well circulated, crusty look to it. The set I'm building is all low to mid grade examples (so that it can be affordable and still a challenge), and WOW this fits in perfectly and is definitely the highlight of it so far. Enjoy!

And is it just me or do the dies appear to be rotated a bit? About 10-15 degrees maybe?

For those that don't know, I am starting pharmacy school in the fall.

A nice rare coin is always a nice addition to your collection
Nice grab.
Theres one on ebay right now ( 160409353407) but I'm on the line as to whether its a 1823 or 22 as the seller also states. He's not too far away from my shop and I know him a little so I might mosey over there tommorow.
I dont know much bout em just that Ive never owned one

<< <i>shouldnt it be in a genuine holder for scratched? >>
the scratch is barely noticeable in hand, but either way the coin is rare enough that the grading services will slab it. check some auction archives and you will find many examples that are much more beat up, yet still in holders

Shottaker, I wouldn't take a shot on the one on eBay (9160409353407). It is a 23, imo. Note the difference in the tops of the 2 and the 3, the 3 is more closed. Compare to the OP's.
The skin overall looks great though and if it floats your boat, thats all that matters.

<< <i>I've been on the lookout for several years for a nice example and I haven't found one....yet. I've learned to throw away the sheet for this date. Great pick up! As for the scratch...I'm sure the image magnifies it and on a key date in that condition it's perfectly acceptable and not distracting. >>
So why aren't you going on to Rich Uhrich's site and buy one if it is still available, he has had a couple lately? >>
He does have a couple listed, but I would far from call either of those a nice example:

Very true, the 2 he currently he has are damaged. I think he still has the pic up of a PCGS VF25 he sold like a year ago...I missed that coin sadly and it's a BEAUT!

I don't collect bust dimes, but hell, even I called Rich Uhrich about that PCGS VF-25 (OGH) he had listed a while back. I too learned that I was too late.
But, I dont have it in hand.
<< <i>BTW HLRC has one currently for sale and it is still available as shown on his website as of 12 noon pst. >>
Hints of past grandeur. I like that description.
Either way, beautiful piece! Congratulations!
