Did Anyone Go To the Ohio Coin Expo Over the Weekend?

It had been a while since I last went (2 years). I picked up some nice wheat cents from Robert at WI Numismatics who recently came back to the show - good guy. I liked some of the responses I heard when I asked "so what's the state of the hobby?" - everything from "it's down due to the recession" to "despite the recession, wheat cents are still strong" image

  • Yes!

I went with a family friend and picked up a 1921 Peace - in a nice AU with a few dings to the cheek but nice luster and color.

Compared to the last show it seemed much quieter. I was trying to find a 09-s vdb in MS-62/63 but all that was to be found was XF or MS-64.

I sold a few bits for some show spending money but with silver prices the buy values werent as great as they had been previously.

Nope... I've never had much luck at those...
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Yes was there saturday afternoon for a while.....

Picked up some 2010 silver bullion coins (SAE, Maple Leaf, Brittania, Koala & Australia Year of the Tiger) and a 93 1 oz Mexican Onza.....

Show was a bit slower then the previous one, but I heard that Friday was very busy and saturday morning was much busier.....

I saw how much the proof gold eagles have tumbled back to earth.....

    Was happy I went.....

  • Didnt do ohio, but hit 3 small shows in Michigan over 2 days. Shows are getting better imho especially the really really small monthlies. I see a lot of retail collectors setting up tables and selling inventory. A ton of NEW numismatists that are fly by night coin buyers. The guys that put up flyers in little party stores. Too bad they cant tell the difference between type 1/2 proofs, small dates, or even grade a coin halfway decently. Their bu dollars run from vf cleaned (yes a guy was THAT bad) to ms65/66 material. Bought an original roll of 1879-O dollars for the $20 per coin a guy had them priced at as they were "only xf"!. I'm usually a very honest and nice guy, but when these guys set up and then lecture me on how expert they are in the coin field and who they know blah blah, theyre going to get picked HARD. All out nuclear picking! From type 2 1972 ikes to 1887/6 dollars nothing will escape once they take that stance. No free lessons or guidance from me then. I remember a guy shaking his head a long time ago when I paid him $400 for the 78-cc gsa he had even though it only booked for a hundred fifty in the redbook. I should be far richer then I am but I'm rich enough with my family and my conscience and a little money in the bank.

One guy this weekend hesitated to take a company check for a few hundred bucks till the guy set up next to him offered to pay for it himself since half his showcase was my material he had on memo.......
