My first large cent

I haven't had much love for the old crusty copper but I saw this beauty and had to buy.

Was priced at VF grade, what do you guys think?

    Probably been cleaned by the look of the toning , but what large cents have'nt been cleaned before. Still nice copper.

    XF details, but cleaned and recolored, as sadly many have been.
    Be careful with those large cents.....I never had much love for them either, until I acquired a high grade middle date example for my type set a number of years ago.....now many $thousands of dollars later, I'm quite passionate about them!

    That is a great coin to start with, imo. There is a serious problem however. With Large Cents, there is a very dangerous tendancy to start becoming interested in them, to take them into your hands and to start thinking about how things were, back when they were in use. This begins to create a very strong urge to get another one. And then another.

    I urge you to proceed with caution - they can become addicting to the max!image

    ...I tend to like the more ciculated ones for that very reason....the history....where they went, who spent them, the stories to tell....you know the worn ones were really a part of society in the day....

    ...I also do not get too worked up on whether they were cleaned or not, if the price is appropriate.....I don't even call these "problem" coins....it's just that more has happened to them along their journey

    ......I collect old stuff......

    I think that over time you may develop a love for the old crusty copper and learn why it is cherished over cleaned and recolored copper. Then your perspective on beauty will change and grow. Especially if you hang out here!

    Cleaned, recolored or not...I agree yours and all the others are very fun coins.

    The OP's coin is perfect in this instance, because you can't really hurt anything by handling it!!!! It's the kind of coin that can you you excited!! Fun!!!!image

    I like the coin. Net EF, gently cleaned generations ago, and recolored to a pleasing hue. Unfortunately I cannot give the coin a sticker but will give you a sticker for your enthusiasm. image

    early copper is tough... this one looks corroded, cleaned and is now retoning. Quite a number are like this so I wouldn't worry about it so much... what do they say in Jersy... fugetaboudit...
