2005 20th Anniversary ASE... PCGS Error???
The ASE program began in 1986; therefore, the 20th anniversary should be in 2006. Plenty of PCGS 2006 20th Anniversary ASE's on eBay prove that fact.
I have a 2005 coin that is slabbed "20th Anniversary" when in fact it is only the 19th anniversary. I can't find any others on eBay so I must ask, is this an error by PCGS? or is there a reasonable explanation for this?

If you got married in 1986, you would celebrate your 1st anniversary in 1987 (even though it would occur in your 2nd calendar year of being married) and your 20th anniversary would be in 2006 (even though it would occur in your 21st calendar year of being married).
same goes for the coins here, with the 2006 being the 20th anniversary, and with the 2005 being the 20th coin of the series made during the 20th Calendar year of the Eagle program.
same story with the Lincolns last year. 2009 was the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent, even though it was the 101st calendar year in which they were made.

I agree with you completely, except for the statement that they are both right. There is only one 20th "anniversary" - 2006.

2006 Anniversary labels are Mint Marketing, Mint's official anniversary year.
Mint was a year late.
Plenty of slabbed coins with both labels.

<< <i>2005 Anniversary labels are PCGS marketing, nothing official from the mint.

A blunder on the part of PCGS.
Fortunately, nobody was killed in the train wreck, so life goes on.

Marketing. Anniversaries can be taken differently as we had hashed this out on the forum a few years ago.
If you get married in 2000, then is 2009, or 2010, your TENTH anniversary?
It depends on where you start counting from, right?
So, replace the date of marriage with the release of SAEs. Where does your anniversary for the SAEs really lie now?
So, since the mint put out something in 1995, and weren't doing that in 2005, the services decided to put the label on it themselves (hey, 1995+10=2005, RIGHT?)
But, it got monkeyed up when the mint, in 2006, announced the 2006 20th anniversary release.
So, PCGS marketed their label in convention with what had gone before....counting from day 1 of the release of the SAEs rather than waiting a year.
Someone at the mint decided to count starting from the first year (1987) after the first release, and got 2006 as the 20th.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
<< <i>We should all realize by now that the GOVERNMENT can't count . . . lol >>
Actually, I am one of those that feel that 2006 should be the "right" 20th annv (21st coin, but 20th annv).
Of course, going by the first way, this is the 25th annv of the SAEs
