Thinking of finally starting a new collection (8 years later)

8 years ago I started getting back into the hobby. I thought I was doing good for myself. I had just joined the Navy and was now able to buy cards, by the box, in bulk! But of course someone had to rain on my parade! Back then I was living with this chick who also lived with her sister. Well one day I was minding my own business playing Grand Theft Auto 3 on PS2 and her sister's boyfriend comes in with a stack of cards in top loaders and just kinda tosses them in my lap...

These were the cards:
54 Bowman Mantle
54 Jackie Robinson
54 Whitey Ford
54 Pafko
55 Aaron
55 Bowman Aaron
56 Clemente
56 Koufax
56 Campanella
57 Ted Williams
57 Drysdale
57 Aaron
57 Clemente
57 Berra/Mantle
58 Aaron1?
58 Mantle
58 Mays/Snider
58 Aaron2?
59 Mantle
59 Aaron
59 Musial
60 Curt Flood
62 Maris
62 Whitey Ford
63 Drysdale/Koufax/Gibson
64 Koufax/Ellsworth/Friend
64 Rose
65 Maris
68 Flood
68 Yaz
69 Clemente
69 Aaron
69 Drysdale
69 Williams

He apparently inherited these cards from his grandmother when she croaked. He didn't collect them or anything. He just had them. Needless to say this angered me...

I wrote them all down and vowed that one day I would own each and every card he had except mine would all be in better condition, and that I would completely appreciate them!

Well I was cleaning my "card room" the other day and I found the list. So I figured I'd start it up. Thoughts?

did you ever tag the 2 of them?
  • You had me until the part where you joined the Navy image

JK..... Like any good individual in the military would of done, I hope you gave him 50 bucks for beer money for all of those.

There are some nice cards there -- but don't buy them for the wrong reasons.

Just because some other guy has/had them doesn't mean that they are the unique cards that you should go after. Please yourself, don't chase ghosts. Get maximum satisfaction for your hard earned dough.

That's a great list! Go for it. And once you get them all graded, and toss them in that guy's lap (3.19 pounds), I'd like to see the look on his face. image

Thats a nice selection of cards, certainly attainable without breaking the bank too.

Although Im not 100% sure if the 54 Mantle is a tough/expensive card or not- I know the 54 Ted Williams is..

Either way if you do it make sure you have fun and enjoy the cards, buying them just because you can isnt always the best reason- I know your a Boston fan so make sure you would enjoy these as much as say a nice '54 Teddy Ballgame image
  • That was my first thought.. attainable without spending a life savings!
  • Do you have any checked off yet?
Trying to climb the 1954-55 Topps Hockey ladder for the second time.

  • Great list of players but when looking at the year of the cards I realize that the list is all over the map. Make your own dream list that has your own type of focus. You will get so much more out of it. I do understand how you must have felt at the time but fulfilling a jealousy list may leave you feeling a little empty when you are done.

You said what I was thinking.

Adam, Go for it, What kind of condition were the cards in that the other guy had?
  • I cant think of a more stupid reason to collect something. You sound like my 3 year old who ONLY wants a toy because the other kid has it. And once my kid gets that toy from the other kid, he doesnt play with it for even 5 minutes before hes ready to see what the other kid is now playing with.

Having said all that, maybe its just in our nature. How else could you explain the registry?

    Good luck Adam.

    That's quite a list!

On the guy's lack of reverence about cards? It's pretty normal. We collect for so many different reasons - none of which excites the sister's boyfriend.

    My wife thinks I'm "odd."

On the otherhand, 75 pairs of shoes in the closet is odd to me. image

If ya have time, please scan your pickups.

I love your reasoning behind this project. Seriously, I do. I have done things for the same type of reasons.
  • Absolutely! Who knows why we collect what we collect? Certainly those cards are attainable, and all desirable. Go get it!!! Maybe you could suggest it to PSA in the key cards category as "The cards that guy threw in my lap"....

    I'd skip the 68 Flood.

Sorry I haven't been on today to reply.

The guys cards were vg/ex from what I can remember. I'll probably grab them up in the best I can afford which I don't expect to be too high on the Mantles. I actually bought a 54 Jackie Robinson back then that the chic I was living with stole when I went on my first deployment... (she's lucky I have long since lost touch with her) Needless to say I haven't touched the list since, probably because I haven't seen it til the other day. So I think I'm gonna put it together. I'll be in no rush to do this but I think it will be a fun journey. I'll probably put together a showcase on PSA for them but will definitely post as I go.

That will probably be the first I get since it's the cheapest!

Gecko you're a tool. Please stay out of this thread so the sewage that you constantly dump on this board doesn't contaminate it.

If for nothing else it will be a nice addition that I'll be able to show off to a few local collectors I see every now and again.

Dang. This always happens to someone else and never me. image

That's what my dreams are made of...

Best of luck if you decide to go for it. Got a time-frame in mind??
