1988 Topps Error & Variation List

Since I've been reorganizing all of my error and variation boxes, I figured I'd post some of my "definitive" lists on here (as time allows). Below is a list of variations that I have confirmed to exist from multiple sources (in most cases, recurring in different packaging types, different geographical sources, etc)

Enjoy:

3 Mark McGwire RB
4 Eddie Murray RB
6 Nolan Ryan RB (yellow, white or no line where hand meets border. Printing error that has affected a large portion of the run)
18 Al Leiter
34 Ricky Horton (errant red line above CARDINALS on front and corr.)
37 Ed Romero (YELLOW NAME, this is another printing flaw that has affected a large chunk of the run and to different degrees)
190 Candy Maldonado (white line at lower left of photo/border and corr.)
229 Jeff Musselman ( 2 different sized white spots by trophy on front and without a white spot)
230 Pat Tabler (Yellow or red dugout bench)
231 Pittsburgh Pirates (Yellow spot on Bonilla's cap and corr.)
269 Ellis Burks (Name touches trophy on front and name moved away from trophy)
295 Bert Blyleven (Cracks in wall over his shoulder and cracks airbrushed away)
330 Ed Whitson (mark on thigh and mark airbrushed away)
348 Jim Eisenreich (White, Red, Blue and Red/Blue colored line on his arm)
374 Doc Edwards (Pink ink outside of name triangle, blue ink outside triangle and no ink outside triangle)
381 California Angels (Magenta "slash" on Joyner's sleeve, "slash" airbrushed a greenish color and slash whited-out)
405 Doc Gooden A.S. (White tip of R, tip filled in light blue, solid blue R)
416 Keith Moreland (CUBS lettering at bat unfilled and filled-in blue)
447 Jeff Montgomery (2 different sized blotch over shoulder types and corr.)
493 Mike Greenwell (Name touches trophy on front and name moved away from trophy)
497 Kevin Mitchell (Gray, Green and Blue colored jersey types)
528 Checklist
533 John Farrell (Green blotch on sleeve and corr.)
544 Jim Traber (Bat tip in top border and bat tip colored orange to match top border)
571 Mark Williamson (Bottom of ORIOLES yellow at hat and corr.)
580 Mark McGwire (Dark green stripe in top right border and corr.)
628 Dave Henderson (Black mark on lip and mark airbrushed)
663 Ron Blomberg (line in right border, line through name on front, line through both areas and corr.)
739 Daryl Boston (Green line along bat and corr.)
754 Mike Lacoss (1/4 pink circle in upper right of photo and corr.)
767 Jose Lind (Blue, Yellow, White shadow behind Topps logo and without shadow)
778 Keith Comstock
792 John Tudor (Last name missing on back)

And there are many, many more minor varieties (yes, even more minor than most of these...) out there.

Plus, Tom Candiotti's card has been found without his name printed on front!

  • Was that the year with the Stanley Jefferson variation, or was it 1989? Also, the checklist had Steve Carlton listed at #455 (I think) and later Shawn Hillegas. (Don't know why I remember that.) Has a Carlton ever been seen? I've always wondered.

Jefferson variations were in 1989. I've never heard of a 1988 Topps Steve Carlton existing but anything is possible.

I agree. We are lucky to have someone so dedicated to tracking errors and more importantly, willing to share their lists and finds.

I agree completely. These posts are fantastic, and you should really check out JC's blog for even more good stuff.

I have a question, though. JC, do you just sit on the couch looking through monster boxes of commons? How do you find these? You rrecently blogged about a 1993 Russ Swan that you had not seen before. How in the world did you find that one?

I knew Bishop would show up here. I remember a couple years ago hearing about his chasing the insert cards and thinking it was either the craziest or greatest thing ever. I'm still not sure which it is. image

crazy;...But the insert I set was after was 1991 Topps game cards. There are about 240 of them in numeric order in 4 series, A,B, C and D. As I recall I still need 4 of them image

I would like to say it was a test to see if you were paying attention...but just careless. Ward is 696.

Also. I have a card with my set the source of which I can not recall. I have card 300 Mattingly batting, but also a card 300 with Mattingly in portrait. They are the same except the portrait has a brighter orange back and omits the "Led South Atlantic..." line and has "Special World of Baseball Edition" at the bottom. Anyone know what that is ? Bob probably remembers. He remembers everything

Here's a link to a current auction. Since the price is a bit outrageous, I think the link will be good for a while.

1988 Topps WORLD OF BASEBALL #300 DON MATTINGLY PSA 9

    From my 2004 Beckett Almanac:

This one-card Special World of Baseball Edition set features a color portrait of Don Mattingly with white borders. The back displays player-information and career statistics.

Wow. What a write-up. How about why was it issued? How many were made? Thanks Beckett.

I bought mine for $50, which ironically is what Beckett lists it for in NM-MT.
  • bishopbishop Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭
I knew Bob F would remember. It's scary really

At least Beckett lists it....Bob L (AUPT) ?

I paid about $ 50 for mine as well, so I wish the seller all the best
