NewP Trade Dollar-- 1876

kazkaz Posts: 9,287 ✭✭✭✭✭
Won on an eBay auction, it's in an old small ANACS holder graded AU58. It actually appears prooflike, or nearly so. I photographed it so the devices stood out from the darker fields. The mark to the left of Liberty's knee is only noticeable from a certain angle and is actually quite small. Any comments about availability of PL '76 trades would be appreciated (paging Crypto, TDN, Keoj). Type 1/2, not especially scarce. (sorry photos not the greatest, looked ok on my monitor but not so great from Photobucket.. will need to reshoot)

  • What's up with the ghosting around the devices? Looks cleaned too?

The 'ghosting' looks like a bit of frost and tarnish. It was probably wiped with a jeweler's cloth accounting for the hairlines, but has not been polished. It has about the same amount of hairlines as my AU PCGS '78-s.

1876-P is a slightly tougher coin. All the Philly coins are harder to find than their San Francisco counterparts.

I could hardly find any in the Heritage archives when I was doing research prior to bidding. Dick Osburn had one for sale a couple of months ago. I have not seen one in a lower circulated grade (my usual choice in Trade Dollars) on eBay, so when this one appeared, I went after it. The strike is very nice, too.

I have never understood the pricing for the 76-P.It has a much lower mintage than the 73-S,74-P 75-CC,76-CC and 77-CC.Yours looks like it has been wiped and the prooflike fields accentuate that.I have noticed nearly all Trade $'s graded less than 65 seem to have some hairlines.I think the 76-P is a very undervalued date.

It has a nice look with the frost and subtle toning.

Demand my friend. It is all about the demand. Few date collectors so the Type guys go after the 75-78s mint coins, Carson guys(when they are not dating models) go after the CC's and the key date guys go after the 75,73cc,76cc,78cc. So it has to compete with common dates pricing to sell to the Type collectors
