It seems too good to be true, right? I don't use Paypal that often...maybe 2-3 times a month for BST transactions and I'm always waiting for an e-mail from Paypal that says, "Jeez, how many gifts are you giving and receiving???"

I don't think they're talking about using paypal gift for an eBay purchase. They're talking about using it to avoid paying fees for coin sales off the boards?

May as well say it like it is, alot of people think it is ok to steal from Paypal because they don't agree with PayPal's bussiness structure or fee's and it is easy to do. But it is what it is. Actually alot of people who do it are the same ones that get "Moral" about coin issues? I have done it once but afterward it did not feel right and so I won't do it again. Thats just me and not meaning it is wrong for others, we all do what we feel is right to do. AL
In reality i doubt if its overused at all , the bottem line being the buyer loses all aspects of whats otherwise a very good protection plan. The only one who benefits is the seller. In light of that i think most people would be suspicious of a seller asking for such a transaction.Itll work between buddies, but thats about it.
I see it as a total truth deal only. Buyer and seller have no protection, about like trading sight unseen between collectors. I have used it for small items and will continue to do so. And I give them way too much in fees to get squeamish about it costing them.

Yes, but you're taking advantage of the services that paypal offers. It may be a total truth deal between the two transacting parties, but the middle man (paypal) is getting screwed.

Sorta kinda.. The fee's you pay paypal help cover the expense of offering the guarantee that paypal offers.. Those services are forfeited by using the "gift" option.. I don't really care for the 5 days I have to wait when transferring the money into my bank account.. Someone is earning interest on that money during the 5 days.. Who do you think that is?
Well we all choose to use ebay and paypal and we know there fee's going in, does the fact that we don't agree with there terms justify stealing from them? Cause in fact that is what were doing when we gift on true purchases, now I don't work for paypal and don't really care what anyone does, A seller told me the other day that PayPal gift was the best deal going right now, a company will facilitate transfering your money but you don't have to pay for the service, just seems odd how up in arms we get when were talking about a person being taken advantage of in a coin deal but it is ok when were justifying why we would steal from a company. I was told along time ago that there are many ways to rob without a gun. AL

Have you ever wondered why PayPal can instantly "withdraw" your funds after a purchase but it takes them 4 to 5 days to transfer money "into" the same account?
If PayPal wasn't making money on this option it wouldn't be offered.. That's "business 101"....
I believe most people don't use the Gift option. eBay sellers, and many of the sellers that use Paypal are selling to someone they don't know. I think the gift option is only used in forums like these and of course, for the real Gifts. Ebay and Paypal already make a killing with their immense amount of users and members, so in conclusion the system is fair.

The transfer is immediate, but the bank holds the money to gather interest in it.
I would be more sympathetic to PayPal's plight if eBay hadn't removed the sellers ability to offer checks and money orders as a payment option under the specious argument that they are trying to protect buyers when, in fact, it was nothing more than a fee grab.
I agree with you Russ, I am not sympathetic to PayPal, I use there services because of convenience, I do not like there fee's but I understand them upfront and agree to pay them when useing there service. All of the reasons in the world do not justify stealing a service, I don't see the problem with admitting what you do and thats it, yes I did it, yes when buying and selling and useing a gift feature that is stealing from PayPal right? Anyway I won't comment on it anymore, sounds like I work for PayPal when in fact I don't like there monoply type buss plan with ebay, but like I said, we aggree to use there services or not. AL
gsafan, it is not stealing if your sending a gift, it is only stealing if your buying and selling goods and saying it is a gift, they don't say you can use this service if you don't want protection, And Nobody said you should feel guilty. each person justifys there own actions, AL
<< <i> The transfer is immediate, but the bank holds the money to gather interest in it. >>
That is incorrect.. When I questioned the PayPal rep last year regarding this he said they do not transfer the money back into an account as fast as they withdraw it.. Multiply that by the thousands of transactions a day and you will see the amount being held in the PayPal system being very substantial...
Once again I will bring up the same thing as before..
If PayPal wasn't making money with this option it wouldn't be avail..
Let me state for the record that I have never used the gift feature. In fact, I sold an item outside of eBay a couple days ago and the buyer asked if I wanted him to use the gift feature. I told him no, that fees are a part of doing business.
That said, I'm not going to sit in judgement of those who do and completely understand why they would. Considering the treatment coming from the eBay / PayPal cabal as of late, who can blame them?
If you don't like the paypal system, then you're free not to use it. I don't particularly like them, but I still don't think it's right to use their gift option if you're doing business. If you want to send money to grannie, by all means, send it as a gft. I think it's distasteful to take advantage of their services on one hand and then screw them for the fees because you don't like them with the other.
No, and for the record, I rather dislike PayPal and eBay for their business practices; however, I am a paying customer of both because they don't bother me enough to no longer do business with them.
As to "stealing" or cheating by avoiding fees this way, I have a general inquiry and a rhetorical question (though I understand the need for fees, I'm curious ) :
Who's money is stolen or who's cheated when it's OUR money in THEIR account ?
Strange, I always figured that the bank holds the money. Anyways, I believe Paypal offers the Gift option as a service to customers, as I'm sure the vast majority of Paypal transactions are done the normal way.

Not necessarily true - it can be done with ebay purchases also.

Paypal has to maintain their system, pay fees to banks, and pay their expenses to keep things running. Taking their service for free (unless you're doing it with their ok, as in a legitimate gifting) is the problem.

True, but you'd have to have a cooperative buyer who was willing to bypass the eBay system, log in to PayPal and make the payment directly.
