ever have one of their 5x animals?
  • I had my first Five Guys burger last fall in Baltimore. It was one of the best I've ever had, topped only by In-N-Out as far as chains go. Now we have one (northern IN) on my way to the local B&M... always a temptation... but the coins are a stronger draw for me.

I already booked a reservation at the best table in the joint for Longacre and RYK. The chef is preparing a special double cheeseburger with bacon for you at my request. image >>

You could not pay me to eat one of those. image >>

OK, let's start the bidding image

I will donate $200 to APN's charity auction, if RYK agrees here in writing that he will have a burger at Five Guys.

This is for a WHOLE burger, no cheating or sneaky rationalizations allowed. I will let him off the hook for the fries, because those are actually really bad for you. >>

First of all, that's not what I call paying "me". image

Secondly, I would not eat a bacon crumb for $200, let alone a bacon double cheese burger. I am not sure that there is a number that will get me to move on my position. >>

Because you're jewish, I can understand your avoidance of bacon. You're probably a lot healthier for it too. >>

Actually, I was Jewish 20 years ago and ate my share of bacon. My avoidance of bacon is not a decision based on religion. Largely for health reasons, I stopped eating meat (beef, chicken, pork, and related species) 15 years ago. If anyone wants to get off hamburgers, I will post a link to a NYT article about where hamburger meat comes from. It will make your skin crawl. image
  • Thats probably true of fast food burgers , not so when it comes to a local pennsylvania dutch butchers , they dont have a problem grinding a steak into burger for peeps ..lovely

I never heard of Five Guys.

I can't remember the name of it, but there's a nice pub across the street from the convention center's front entrance that has excellent fish'n chips, and crabcakes (and beer).

I choose not to click on the link, so as to not sully my view of hamburgers. Longacre is excessively distressed that the fine cuisine at Five Guys will not be part of the repast at Baltimore. Homer: Are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Ham?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

When I was in my late teens I dated a girl who's family owned a huge chicken refinery.

Her brother gave me a tour of the entire facility... afterward I couldn't eat chicken for almost a decade.

I read RYK's article, and my impression is that while there are risks, eating a hamburger is probably just as safe as taking a plane to Baltimore.

There is no question that Americans consume an unhealthy amount of red meat.

I eat maybe one hamburger a month.

In March I hope that one is at Five Guys!

However, if you're looking for great kosher food, Baltimore is a wonderful city to get it. Just head to Pikesville (20 minutes from the city) and there are plenty of choices. My must-hit place is Accents Grill (though I usually go for the Philly Steak sub). Wasserman and Lumberger is the place to go if you just want to see piles of raw meat to cook at home image

That's like saying that Coinosaurus will donate $200 to the American Lung Association if I smoke a carton of cigarettes. Therefore, I should do it.

Airplanenut's charity drive is to raise money to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. Many cancers (including colon and breast) are linked to the consumption of red and processed meats. You want to reduce the death rate from cancer, don't get it in the first place. Don't eat the hamburger.

I expect that Longacre has made private dining arrangments for the two of us, at an undisclosed location, along with a to-be-announced numismatic luminary or two, to which we will travel via a yet-to-be-determined means of transport. image
  • In Baltimore the junk food king is "POLOCK JOHNNY'S"!

In Dundalk it is "Captain Harvey's"
FYI, if you get a large at captain harvey's take a friend.

While I acknowledge RYK's concern with hamburgers, this is not an issue when you buy fresh ground beef - they actually grind it right there without all the funny business. Some burger joints only use fresh ground meat. If it is frozen who knows what they put in it before shipping.

FYI - a bacon cheese burger and "small" fry from Five guys is over 1500 calories.

I think that there is a rule of thumb that in order to eat healthy, only about 30% of your calories should come from fat. So, in order to make sure you stay within the healthy guideline, you need to drink about a dozen beers with a meal like that. image

Ostensibly, that is so, but since alcohol gets metabolized in the fat pathways, that plan will not work. I laud your effort. image
  • I gave up most meat 30 years ago, but a half dozen times a year or so I have to have a burger or a hot dog, Five Guys makes a great burger and if you don't make it a a regular stop it won't hurt you!

I do not disagree with this approach, from a general health standpoint. It's just not for me.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement there, RYK.

    So, a question.

Would rather eat a Five Guys burger, or listen to "I Take My Chances" by Mary Chapin Carpenter 100 times in a row?

    A Goldbully review................................

You crazy people in this thread 'forced' me to go to my very first Five Guys.

    I had a 'Little Burger' and a small Coke........$6.50!!!

The burger was delicious, I will only have a salad for dinner tonight, as I am still full from the dripping hunk of burger meat.

BTW, I had M-O-P-GM as toppings!!!! Yummy yummy yummy!!!!

    image

I do prefer the the In and Out Burger toasty roll!!

All and all.....it will be a while before I go back.

It was very difficult not buying those fries. I especially like the liberal amount of vinegar squirter bottles!! image

All you guys who don't eat meat will help the supply and keep the prices lower for
