Deal gone bad... Ever have one?

I recently was offered a graded baseball card off-line. I asked for a scan and after receiving the scan, I said I was interested, but needed to know the asking price. A day later the seller sold the card to someone else. Is this not good business protocol or am I reading into this to much?

Thanks for your attention and insight...

I wouldn't even say you had a deal there, can't blame the seller for getting what he thinks is the best deal, I agree that it can be frustrating when people have something for sale without a price but I always try to be aggressive so that a seller knows I'm seriously interested.

Sounds like there was no "deal;" just some talk about maybe
    doing a "deal."

Unless there are previous promises/agreements, the first guy
with an offer and cash is the one who gets the "deal."

I only had 1 bad expierience on Ebay after 390 transactions. My wife prebought a Star Wars Stormtrooper blaster for me for Christmas one year and paid for it even though it was not released for sale until the begininning of January. The seller contacted us that the shipment was delayed and that I would get it by the end of January. I contacted Master Replicas (the company who made the blaster) and they confirmed it was delayed. The end of January came with no blaster and then the end of February came with no blaster. The seller told me he still has not received it from the manufacturer. A few weeks later he contacted me and told me that it came in and that as soon as I pay for it he will ship it. We told him that we already paid for it but he told me that because of the delay paypal took the money out of his account. I showed him that it was still in his account but again he refused to ship the blaster. The blaster cost $550 and we did not ewant to lose that or pay for it again. I went on the FBI website to look into internet fraud and it gave us a number to call if we are having problems. I contacted the seller one more time and told him that if I do not receive the blaster by Thursday I will contact the FBI to look into it for internet fraud. What do you think came in the mail on Thursday? The blaster. I am not sure what the FBI would of done but it scarded him into sending the blaster confirming that he was intended to stiff us for the $550.

  • I won a "charity auction" for 30 bucks, and after I made my donation, I did not get what I paid for in that auction. It was a board member here in fact. PM me if you want the details so he doesnt burn you too!

    They won't do anything.

But, dropping their name is sometimes useful to scare inexperienced bad guys.

www.ic3.gov is a good aggregator of fraud complaints. When they
get enough complaints against an individual/entity, they forward
them to LEOs like the FBI.

The dollar-threshold at the FBI is super high. They don't look at low-dollar
fraud and they seldom act unless a local LEO has already made a LARGE
case on paper. The Feds are busy with other stuff.

I saw the site for internet fraud and dropped their name to the seller. They probably would not of done anything but it worked for me. Maybe I just got lucky but i though it was interesting to share.

Once bought a case of cards from a person in PA....never got the cards and the person eventually filed for bankruptcy....good news is that I eventually got the money all back from backruptcy court but it took about four years via small monthly payments.....

Thankfully, all of my losses on E-Bay have been covered by my credit card. I've really only had a handful of bad transactions on E-Bay out of 3000+....not too bad overall. The worst transactions I've had have been with the seller UKRedskins who sold me a bunch of bad autographs. I lost close to $1k because I paid with a cash balance instead of a cc.

Same here... I lost $600 on case of UD Hockey a few years back. I paid with my debit card. Now I use my credit card or paypal buyer credit on bigger items.

Only one burn on ebay, a partial 1970 Topps FB set for $30. Never showed up. Was able to track the seller down and send some e-mail threats, then quit. I suppose with over 300 ebay transactions, only having one fraud is rather lucky.

Then there was the recent sketchy ebayer who sold me two lots and then said they were lost. He refunded my money, but the cards were worth 30 times that.

I believe the seller took the bird in hand. It's frustrating, but his conduct was OK IMHO.

If someone is going to "poof" my comments then this comment should be removed as well. All he is trying to do is stir up trouble. Lets be fair here!!
