Newp Standing Rock Dakota Indian Token. Anyone know anything about these?

Has anyone seen one of these before? It is about 1" across. Seems to be made of steel.

Thanks,
Richard

Were there such agencies in Dakota Territory in 1875? That is pre-Little Big Horn, and I don't know that any of the high plains Native American tribes had been forced onto reservations by then.
Don't know one way or the other, but think it should be checked.

A quick search shows the reservation at 4 million acres in 1864.
    Cool piece.

    Thanks,
I saw that one too. I am hoping mine is in the same ballpark. Definitely similar. I wonder what is more collectible the meat or the salt token. I wonder if there are also other product tokens out there.
Now that I have one I have to put together the set. I am sure you all now that feeling.image
It would be interesting to find some info on the actual history of these pieces. Do you think anyone grades these?

Now I have to decide between my other newp, Indianapolis Motor Speedway medal or this for my next icon. Both are just too neat.

Your welcome , first thought would be 10lbs of meat is better than a pound of salt , not in those days it wasnt. You might have one of the higher denomination ones there , like the old saying "worth its salt"

Actually the Little Big Horn fight involved many Indians who had left the reservation.

This token looks hand engraved and somewhat crude. Is there any contemporary documentation discussing these tokens? I'm concerned this may be a fantasy piece made to sell to collectors not unlike those bawdy house tokens sold in the flea markets.

I am doubting that. it looks more punched than engraved. I don't think there would have been much of an interest in making a fake thing like this. You would have to really be into history to even start to get interested.
