Star Basketball....Why wont PSA grade them?

Is it because there are so many "good" fakes that its impossible to tell the difference? Is it because the set was reprinted several times years after the initial release? Whats the true reason, and is this set basically dead because of this?

I think Dizzle or CDsNuts would be able to give you the best answer, but no there are ways to tell the real from the fakes, BGS grades them because they know, and I think the 'original plates were used to reprint them' story is bogus...

The sets are not dead. I sent in a number of cards to BGS (the only cards I have ever sent them) and was able to sell them once they were returned to me for a decent price. BGS is brutal on the grading but considering these cards bounced around in plastic bags I guess that is to be expected.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

How was the centering? I would think that is where BGS would be brutal

Maybe you should have started this thread before you posted your concerns on Lee's BST thread where he is trying to sell his set.

  • Nobody answered my question. WHY WONT PSA GRADE THESE CARDS?

  • << <i>Nobody answered my question. WHY WONT PSA GRADE THESE CARDS? >>

Supposedly they were reprinted/re-released in the early 90s using the original printing plates and sold on Shop at Home. There is no way to tell originals from the fakes, though the number of fakes released was probably less than everybody thought.

BGS will grade them as supposedly they received guidance on how to grade originals as not every card was reprinted. FOr issues which had high amounts of reprints BGS needs some sort of set pedigree if I am not mistaken.

PSA won't grade these because they don't have an expert on staff who knows enough about them. And apparently they don't want one.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

  • If folks harass folks on BST threads they should be bammed for interference, i know they absolutely dont tolerate that on the SGC boards.

No. Use the search button in the upper right to read one of the several in depth post all about these cards, distribution, vintage articles, why PSA no longer grades these (they did grade them for a while) and lots of other informitive stuff that your clearly have no idea about.

here is the link to the thread everyone is refering you to http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=11&amp;threadid=631863&amp;highlight_key=y&amp;keyword1=star basketball

anyways.. I thought once BGS started grading these cards...there would be a huge boom in prices.. but haven't really seen much of a pop.. i think a bgs 8.5 jordan rookie only sold for 1700. The 84 and 85 star sets have the first cards of several HOFers. The only star card i own is an 85 otis thorpe... but hope to start picking up some of the HOF rookies. hopefully PSA will change their polocy and start grading them. its the only set from the 80s that really has any upside. the production is low.. and IF psa ever decides to grade them.. i have to believe prices would pop quite a bit. i remember that these used to be in the old becket price guide.. if i remember right the jordan used to be be like 5k and the usa jordan was over a g too.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here

Lee hits the nail on the head with his post on page one. There's several other threads as well if you use the search button.
