Disappointing for Vikings fans - good entertainment for me.

Not sure how I feel about the SB match-up right now.

    Thoughts on the Game

    * Favre made a terrible decision on the last INT.

** Minnesota lost the game several times on all the bad fumbles inside the 10

*** The refs did make some awful calls. The interference in OT, the non-catch allowed in OT, but honestly, it should not have had anything to do with the game if the Vikings would not have played like an Arena team during the game.,

**** The Colts would not have lost to either team. The Saints defense is terrible, the Colts will put up 40+ in the Superbowl, unless the conservative history of coaching in Indy continues. (Ie. Dungy---1 Superbowl with 7 of the top teams..bad coaching cost the Colts 2-3 Superbowl wins)

***** In two weeks, all will be forgotten and we can get back to the talk of baseball

<< <i>For example, the 3rd down play when they called the Saints for Roughing Farve (the guy was already tackling him! Even Aikman stated it shouldn't be called.) and they get the flag. Then later on, Brees throws the ball, and the vikes piledrive him to the ground, no call. >>

Well if Aikman said it shouldn't be called, it must be fact.

I agree it was a questionable call. Slightly lifting Favre off the ground and driving him to the ground probably made the difference.
I didn't understand the no call on the next play though, the one Favre actually sprained his ankle on. I thought the rule clearly stated
that you can't dive at the QB's legs. That's the one that should've brought a flag.

In any event, you can't turn the ball over 5 times and then blame the refs.

    Go Colts.

the look on Favre's face near the end of the first half was unforgetable.....the key to the game was rooted in the Vikes failure to capitalize on a brutal Saints mistake which would have allowed Favre to take a lead and an emotional high into the locker room.....while he was standing with AP on the sideline afterwards, he mouthed a million truths.

    "It's over."

    and, he was right.

< << Favre limped off the field at the end of the game and I'm thinking maybe he didn't trust himself enough to run for it on that 3rd down, though obviously he should have at least tried..

I don't understand why some people seem to revel in his failures, though. The guy has kept his nose clean, never gotten arrested or beat up his wife or gf, plays the game hard and with a ton of energy and enthusiasm, and at 40-years-old he became the oldest player to start an NFC Championship game and still he gets ridiculed? I know he's done a lot of flip-flopping about retirement, but shouldn't it be his decision in the end anyway whether to retire or not? Both teams he left (Packers and Jets) had made a decision to move on without him, so why the bitterness? Just wondering... >>

umm you are wrong. he retired from the Packers and the Jets. they didnt cut him. he asked the Packers to release him but they refused and then traded him instead. you dont think that chilly willy and bevell were tampering with him before the packers traded him?? why do you think he retired so fast from the Jets and then asked for his release a few weeks later. that was his way to get to the vikes to spite the Packers. oh well, as the saying goes...some times you get what you asked for but worse.

The way I understood it, the Packers had decided to go ahead with Aaron Rodgers as their starter before Favre asked to come back from retirement. At that point, they weren't willing to take him back, so the drama unfolded from there which resulted in his trade to the Jets. The Jets really didn't want him back for this season, either, that's why they traded up to draft Mark Sanchez. Regardless, I think it's a player's choice to decide what team he plays for and I don't begrudge Favre one bit, though I know Packers fans on the whole feel jilted over that whole ordeal..

BTW, if you despise the guy so much why are you actively collecting like every Favre card and ticket stub known to man? LOL.. >>

where have i said that i despise the guy. just trying to set the facts straight. i thought he told the jets he was retiring before the draft last year. if i have some free time i will google it to find out. i just get a kick out how vike fans are rally to bretts defense all of a sudden. its very comical.

Who said I was a Vikings fan?? LOL...I guess I just don't get as emotionally involved in players' decisions as some. Favre had a terrific season, and he is a great competitor. As an NFL fan, I appreciate and admire his efforts. Could he have handled things better? Sure, but that doesn't mean one should enjoy seeing him fail, unless, of course, it's against the team he roots for (and I'm assuming by your sig line that you're not a closet Saints fan)..

  • I'll be the first to admit I am a Vikings fan. To blame Favre would be silly. The Vikes could not hang on to the ball. Period. Lets recap. They have a first down at the 35 yard line and basically don't advance the ball in 2 plays and then have a timeout. They come out of a timeout and have 12 players on the field and move back five yards and out of field goal range. They now have a 3rd and 15 at the 40. If Favre throws it away, they are still out of field goal range and now have 4th and 15. He even admits he wish he would have ran it. If he gets to the 30 or 35 it is still a LONG field goal. He tried to make a play. I still would rather have him on the field than Jackson or Sage Rosenthal. Vikings fans. Do you remember last years game against Philly in the playoffs? Now that was Painful to watch.

I am a huge Saints fan and have been for years. The Vikings outplayed the Saints in darn near every way possible. But the refs did not decide this game. OK - the pass interference call was bunk. But it was on 1st and ten. How do we know that Brees doesn't convert on one of the next couple of plays? There were a number of plays that went against the Saints by the refs, such as the Favre hit. Also, on the play where he got hurt, the Saints guy hit him in the upper leg above the knee as best I can tell. That's legal. He got hurt by being hit by the other guy and being bent over backwards. The refs botched an equal number of calls in both directions. So it basically came down to one team outgains the other by almost 2-1, but turns it over 5-1. I'm sorry, but if you lose the turnover battle 5-1 you will lose almost all of the time. I don't fault Favre. He had a hell of a game. I hope he stays on for another year. And as far as those that say the Saints did nothing... well, they put up 31 points. Those came from some nice drives, some great special teams work, and an opportunistic defense. That's all three phases of the game. I say the Saints earned it. We'll have a heck of a game in Miami.

  • Lots of mistakes made by the Vikes in this game, but without Favre this season I don't think they do nearly as well overall. He had some great games this yr. They gave it a shot and came close, which is better than it could have been. Tough to watch all the fumbles, interceptions, and penalties toward the end though. Still waiting for the yr they win a Super Bowl.

I don't think any sane Vikes fan is saying the Saints didn't deserve it - it just stings knowing, minus the jaw-dropping to's, the Vikes played well enough to win too. I would have preferred getting blown out versus seemingly letting this one slip away.

IMO, conservative play calling on the final drive doomed the Vikes. They got to the Saints 30 and dicked around, causing Farve to have to make that play to get it back w/in field goal range. If the ball had not been picked, it would have been a VERY long FG, 50+ maybe more.

They should have kept the pedal to the metal on 1 and 10 at the 30 with one minute left. Shiancoe could not be covered. I would have done a dunk to him around the 25, or a five and out to Rice (w/o risking a sack). Hindsight.

Don't forget the Vikes safety that flat out dropped that pick in OT.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

Not to mention the absolute worst mental mistake to put them outside of field goal range.... breaking the huddle with too many men.... final drive, game on the line, you got to know whether your in the play or out...

Without that mental penalty, the Vikes run the ball one more time and attempt a 40-45 yarder for the win.

Instead Favre had to make something happen, and great defense by the saints caused Favre to make a bad decision, throwing across his body to a covered target.

Well, as a diehard Lions fan, what I find staggering is that the NFL is still playing football in late January. I had no idea.

    Lol.

As a Lions fan with one of the wealthiest owners in Football I find it as hard to watch the Aints make the Super Bowl before the liedowns. I feel as bad today as I did in 1970 when Dempsey made the Field Goal.image

  • There was lots of blame to go around...from the countless fumbles to the inability of the Vikes defense to stop the Saints in OT and yes, Favre had 2 very costly interceptions and was mostly responsible on a fumble to AP on a bad handoff. Oh, one more thing, about the whole 'Favre has kept his nose clean his career', are you forgetting the long-standing painkiller addiction? I mean its not ridiculous to think he was able to keep his 'ironman' consecutive game streak going as a result of it, and who knows how many games he would have missed as a result if he wasn't on them? Not trying to pick a fight over this, but to suggest he's been clean his entire career is an exercise in selective amnesia.
  • I was just glad to see the Saints D beat his ass up all game!!! After that last TD to run up the score last week, he got what he deserved. Now crawl back under that Mississippi rock and stay there.

I don't think it was a questionable call, he did lift Favre up and then dropped him on his back following through with his body....that is called driving a person to the ground, which was what was called.

Also, Aikman is one of the worst commentators. Half the things he says makes little sense and he appears to lack play calling ability completely. It is always the other guy giving the play calls.

before favre lovers give me more trouble i was sent this picture today of his last play. the drawings on it are not mine.

anyway notice bernard berrian at the top of the screen, he makes a cut to the sideline at the saints 28. HE IS WIDE OPEN. if favre couldn't run so be it, but how he missed berrian is a huge mistake.

by the way peyton manning wants his team to win as much as anyone. he just doesn't act like a child.

watching manning in action is similar to joe montana in the 49ers glory years. it was the works of the beatles, every note and chord perfect. every thing orchestrated and thought out

watching favre is like watching the rolling stones. they can be great, but miss their notes, improvise on stage and say who cares. we are the stones.

if anyone dares go to youtube and search hitler on favre. pg-17 rating but pretty funny especially if you are packer fan.

  • How about the incorrect pass interference call in OT??? The Saints would have had to punt.... Clearly Leber didn't touch the guy and the pass was uncatchable.... The refs need to let the players decide the game by making plays not by making highly questionable calls...especially in OT! There were so many blunders by the Vikes that they didn't deserve to win.... Overtime rules stink and too many times the referees end up deciding who wins the game.... 3 replays in OT and all 3 could of easily went the Vikes way but the Saints got all 3 which makes them a team of destiny ... With all the city has been through in recent years they needed something like this to pick up their spirits. Needless to say the Vikings Jinx continues and they have no one to blame but themselves.. They should have had the game wrapped up way before the end of regulation as they completely dominated every phase of the game except for Turnovers and the scoreboard!

  • I noticed that too, he actually could have hit the receiver on the side line or even the RB coming out, the obvious best play was to run it!

He has every right to play as long as he likes, but NOT for the Bears or Viqueens. The Packers gave him the opportunity to become the legend he is today. had he said so 2 years ago, the Pack would have Rodgers sit another year. Now MN will have to deal with the waffle King. I am and always be a Packer fan and no one, not even Favre is gidder than the team. I am glad not to have to hear about him for 2 weeks before the SB.
