Belated FUN report with NEWPs and Car Wreck (Long)

Nothing like being a solid 2 weeks late huh?
Well I made it down to FUN and what an amusing time it was!
Wednesday saw me up at 3:30 AM or so to drive from my compound in Northern New Jersey to an auto auction in Connecticut which happens to be about 30 miles north of Hartford. Beautiful day... 22-23 degrees, 25mph winds. The drive back from the auction to Newark Airport saw me JUST make my flight. I managed to get seated between two families with screaming children which was fun.
So I make it to Orlando, make it to the rental counter, and find out that for $20 a day more I can have a Turbocharged Volvo instead of a Camry. This turned out to be a tremendously stupid idea, but I did it anyway. More on this later.
Thursday morning I met a bunch of people at Dennys for breakfast including Yellowkid, Ponyexpress8, MFH, Dennis88, STONE, Coinkid and other collectors who I must be forgetting. I've been talking to Mike (MFH) for quite a while about Barbers and know Glenn (Ponyexpress) as I got my awesome 92-S half from him at Baltimore. So Glenn mentions he just got a strong VF 07-S Half. I told him I'd buy it instantly as I've found more problem free chain cents for sale than VF 07-S halves. So we made it over to the bourse and I hit Glenn's table and found 5 nice VF dimes for my set. Glenn was most gracious enough to submit them to PCGS for me.
The rest of the day I walked the bourse floor, and bought... nada. I didn't see another Barber Half that I needed. I mentioned this to Mike and we started walking the floor and it happened. He mtnioned a dealer, Ed Hipps, who he had some luck with in the past so we got to talking.. right across from Harry Laibstain's table mind you. He mentioned that he had just sold a 96-S for $1400 in AU58, Mike was ticked, and so was I as that seemed cheap for that coin, WAY WAY WAY too cheap. Well, long story short we start digging through their NEWPs and there it was.. a gorgeous AU58 96-S half in a PCI MS60 holder. Mike said "You're buying this coin" so I did
We walked across to Harry's table, cracked it out and walked it straight over to PCGS. Since I had to leave before they would be certain to have it done under the show special I sent it in under express.
Later that night I saw an old friend in town (I used to live in Orlando) and made it back in time for Platinum Night, I missed Jay's saints sell but saw some Nickel sell for a few bucks.
Next day I hit the bourse for a little bit and didn't buy anything, but had a blast looking at stuff. Mike didn't want to check out these two tables in the corner at first. Of course I found nothing but he found 2 great coins
Well... then we hit the PCGS Luncheon, and they started talking about the Photograde app on the iPhone, so I pulled out my iPhone and am proud to say that David Hall was showing off MY iPhone After the meeting I got to chat with Dale Friend who is a super nice guy, and we went out and had a cigarette.
Then I hit the BCCS meeting, dropped some more submissions, realized I was late and ran off to the airport.
In the Volvo from hell.
Right before the airport I stopped to buy some cartons of smokes for $55 each (They are $85 each back home) when disaster struck. The Volvo's brakes failed and I smacked it up. I was on an off ramp and the brake pedal went RIGHT to the floor.
The brake master cylinder was leaking brake fluid like a seive. Lovely.
Long story short, I ended up taking a cab back to the airport, dropped off the keys and finally got on the plane and flew home. TO find out that the airport parking was $64 for 3 days. Nice, so much for advertising $11.99/day "Oh we dont do that no more" the guy said.
So... I got my results in on the AU58 later that week AU58!!!!

All in all, it was a fantastic show. Seeing Jay's Saints, Dale's Halves, the 1913 Nickel, meeting people I've been talking to on here, getting some great coins, it was a fantastic experience.

Oh, and you better have been comped, in full, for the Volvo from He!!
It was in a PCI Green holder, I saved the tag somewhere. The reverse looks 64, the obverse has the rub on it.
The AU Barber looks great; however I am not a Barber guy and will have to defer to others as to whether you do, in fact, suck.
Fun report. I enjoyed it. Sorry about the leaking master brake cylinder. Wow, scary. Imagine what could have happened.
Nice job on the PCGS submission...it sorta makes it all worthwhile, huh? Not sure what others think but yes, you probably suck.

I wasn't just buying them for me... the guys at the show saw the pics on my phone of the girl I was buying them for
I had 2 Volvos... safe cars, but they ate trannies

I enjoyed browsing the floor with you - scanning the dealers cases -
and forcing you to buy that 96-S Half.
I didn't have Grey sheets with me and I don't know what they said
about the 96-S in "MS 60" [ PCI Green Holder ] - but I knew immediately
that this coin would cross as an AU 58 - which it did. If I hadn't already
had an 1896-S in PCGS 58, I would have bought the coin myself. BTW,
you paid almost exactly half of what I paid for mine - so - I think you ripped it.
Grey sheets are not a guide anymore on Barber Halves - at least not in the higher
circulated grades - ie: XF - AU. Most dates sell in multiples of the published prices.
For instance, I just paid four [ 4 ] times Grey Sheet Bid for a 1905-O in PCGS 40.
And...I was thilled to get it.
Best of luck locating the few dates you need to complete your Half set.

New Barber Purchases
I paid $1,400 for the coin. I am not looking to sell it to be honest but I have already had PMs offering me well in excess of $2,000 for the coin, one at $2,500 cash today. I would think that a semi key Barber Half in nice AU58 isn't going to sell for anywhere near sheet. FWIW Ed Hipps paid $1,150 for it and I do think I ripped it

What is this Greysheet that they speak of?
I forget what sheet is, but I was thrilled to pay $385 for a raw 07-S in what's probably VF30. I just paid double sheet for an 01-S and an 05-S and was happy to pay it. Mid Grade Barber Halves are very undervalued in the greysheet, I'd say that only a couple of R1-R2 later dates are even remotely appropriately priced on there. If you want a Barber Half in VF/XF as a type coin, a couple of later branch mint coins are available for prices not too far off sheet, the 12-D comes to mind as being readily available in VF/XF for short money.

I'm a manager at a big Toyota dealership... we've been getting nonstop calls on this. I think a small handful out of over 2 million cars had the problem... this is almost as insane as the PR Nonsense I mean floormat recall.
I've a Toyota truck I bought as a leftover in '93 that still gets used for work now and then, it's up around 218K on the odometer and may be the best work truck I've ever owned. Still got the original radiator hoses on it.
