Ever open a sealed box and not get what the box says it has?

Just ripped a 1999 SP Authentic Football Hobby box. Box states One Authentic Autograph per box (one of the reasons I bought it)... 24 foil packs per box with 5 super premium football cards per pack...

Ripped all 24 packs and no autograph card image there were 120 cards in the box as there should be, but no autograph card.... should I write to Uper Deck and complain?? Waste of time? (box still had the upper deck cellophane wrap around it and was purchased from reliable source)... doesn't look to me like it was tampered with...

edit title to show yt was a sealed box (meant to type unopened not unsealed)

  • I bought two cases of topps heritage in 08 and had two boxes like this. You need to save your receipt, upc code off the box and all of the wrappers and send it to them. I did this and was ignored. I never pursued it because I forgot about it. However. that is what I was told to do.

I would write (try calling first) to complain. If they ignore you or tell you that there is nothing that you can do make a stink and tell them you are will never buy their product again.

  • Doesn't the box say "on average 1 per box"?

From 1999? I doubt they will do anything for you.
  • I think it was average 1 auto per box, but they won't do anything as those are stated odds and not guaranteed.

Those boxes were great though in the day--the auto selection was really good if I recall correctly (remember pulling a Jerry Rice /100) and the rookies were 2-3 a box (including those parallel /250 rookies)

I bought a few cases of 08 Goudey and got really screwed on some of the big hits you're supposed to get, the Sports Royalty Autos and Buyback Goudey's, and also got a bunch of boxes that didn't have an auto card in them. I wrote UD in early December, and they got back to me about a month later, asking for my information, etc. I replied, and that is where that situation is at right now.
It wouldn't hurt to write them, but like earlier posts' stated, they might not do anything for a box from 99.
  • My brother ordered a Topps gold Factory set in 1992, and each set was supposed to have the Brian Taylor auto. We went to pick it up at the local card shop and it was wrapped up with shipping tape instead of cellophane. I think my brother paid somewhere near $300 (alot of money for a 14 yr old kid back then). When we got home, of course there was no Taylor auto. We called the cardshop and the scumbag dealer tried to convince my brother that the Taylor was a random insert, however, the box clearly stated it was 793 cards with the Taylor auto. My bro was devastated, so my dad contacted Topps directly. They asked us to ship the set to them and they quickly shipped a brand new sealed set to my brother.

At our local card store I have seen some people drop big bucks opening boxes and if it were me I would be very disappointed. The best card they got was something like a mid grade star auto that you could pick on on Ebay for $30.00. I love to open packs so I just buy the cheap ones and then whatever card that I would like to get from the expensive boxes I would just buy individually somewhere.

But then again everyone is different and collects different things.

kind of what I thought as well... but when you pay good money for the chance it kind of stinks....

  • Were did you get the box? I would never buy any unsealed wax items. Sounds like somone picked or pull the auto already and just added packs to make a full box. It's like people listing newer packs on ebay after the pull the auto or game used they list the rest of packs.

<< <i>Ever open an unsealed box and not get what the box says it has? >>

    was this a typo?

    Did you mean sealed?

If it wasn't sealed, someone cherrypicked out the auto - perhaps? People are ingenius - some how they find out where the 'hot' pack is.

How much did the box cost? Just curious.

Kind of makes me think of that Andrew Dice Clay line about the girl from the bar and holding a tree trunk.

I did mean sealed... factory seal was still intact... Upper Deck Cellophane wrapping...

Not expensive to buy one of those machines to re-seal a box with the plastic - i agree...the box was likely tampered with.
  • Yeah, if I recall the auto was next to last pack on one of the sides (I busted a lot of those boxes)
  • My wife picked up a box of 09 Goudey from Target. I think it was supposed to have 8 packs (plus one bonus pack) or something. It was sealed with the UD stretch wrap. I opened it up and there were only 4 packs inside. I looked it up online and they had a customer service e-mail. I e-mailed them and got an automatic reply that said they would contact me within a few days. After a few weeks with no reply I re-sent the e-mail and gave them dates etc. Again I got the auto reply, and nothing afterward. So I sent a third e-mail and got a little nasty after about another month. I've still got nothing other than the auto reply stating someone will contact me and it has been 6 months or so now. I'm done with UD. I liked the Goudey product, but I'll spend my money on the Topps products that I like instead.

  • It's from 1999, unfortunately, you're S.O.L! That's the way it goes with unopened. If it was the current year, I'm sure you'd be helped.
