How do eBay coin scams come out ahead financially?

drfishdrfish Posts: 952 ✭✭✭✭
A few weeks ago I "won" a high dollar gold coin in an eBay auction that ended up being a scam(hijacked acount with "borrowed" photos of the coins ).After a week and no coin or replies to numerous emails,my payment was refunded within 36hrs of contacting Paypal. In the days of the option of direct payment to the (criminal)sellers I can see the advantage of selling an imaginary coin.I can't see what financial gain is possible with the current Ebay/paypal system for this type of scam. What's in it now for these crooks(email address/mailing address?)? Thanks,Steve

The new rules on eBay and PayPal are a help to protect the buyers. But If the scammer is good they might be able to get the money and run still.
Hope to never find out who the good scammers are.image

I bought a book on eBay last week, paid with Paypal and had the transaction listed on my credit card account in 15 minutes. They obviously moved the funds before they were "sure" the transaction was good...so a scammer might have gotten away with something.

I think PAYPAL is eating some scams rather than the buyers in the past

Kinda dumb on the part of the scammer. All paypal payments are electronic and funds can be traced easily to their final destination. Seems paypal would have no trouble tracking down a thief through paypal to bank account transfer. Might be why paypal is so eager to back all purchases.
