Value on "Star Rare Coin Encyclopedia" 1928 B. Max Mehl

Hi, I'm from the currency boards and have a question more related to the coin side I would like to ask.

I recently bought a lot that was to include the "Star Rare Coin Encyclopedia and Premium Catalog Copyright 1928 Numismatic Company of Texas" only to have it 'missing' from the package. The seller was notified and gave me a full refund and said they would look for it but I don't think I'll be receiving it. I suspect they may have sold it to someone who offered more for just that book. Any opinions on the value of this catalog? Even I am familiar with numismatist B. Max Mehl and that is why I purchased the lot. A 1928 catalog (cost a dollar in 1928!) must have some historical value. Any overall opinions on this matter?

Linky to auction.

What did you pay for the lot? I bought a few Mehl catalogs a few years back for a few dollars each.

In that condition, likely $5. They trade from $3-$15. I don't happen to know if that's a scarce issue, but say $5'ish.

Yup, they were printed by the jillions. The only valuable ones would be very early or very late in the series, or special binding & presentation editions.
  • I bought one on Ebay a few years back for $10-$15 with shipping

Wow, all you guys/gals came thru big time! A big image to all of you. image

I was surprised by the answers. I figured with a cost a dollar ( would seem like a lot in1928) they would have been scarcer. Also the fact that they were so heavily printed (jillions image). I know coin collecting has always been a big hobby just not this long ago. Like all kids I had a pennies & nickel collection back in the early to mid sixties. Would be interesting to compare the 1928 issue (before the 1929 stock market crash) with one issued in 1930-31.

    As for cost, $2.99 + 3.55 s&h = $6.54.

    Thanks everyone. Danny. >>

Hi Danny, the few copies I have were given to me as gifts by collectors and dealers who knew that I am related to B. Max Mehl - he was my grandmother's uncleimage But I promise, I'm not posting to your thread and telling you that in the hopes that you will give me yours, tooimage I think it's great that you feel so good about the welcome you received here.image

sales catalogs frequently have costs printed on them and given away at location - makes it seem like a bargain for thge information
but they are just a we have this (or can get this) for this price and would like to sell it to you listing catalog

even some of the crap catalogs you get in the mail today have prices printed on them, yet cost you nothing

I own the oldest known photo of Mehl. I have it framed and it's in the front room. It was taken in 1893 and used in his later catalogs showing him when he was the equivalent of a "YN".
