Favorite Mickey Mantle?

Just curious what everyone's favorite Mantle is? I'd have to say mine's the 1958 Mantle with the red background number 487. I think one day I'll own one.

  • Mine would be a 1962 Topps #200 mantle. Sold my raw example at a card show for $125 buddy slipped the card in his latest Beckett sub and card popped at a Bvg 6.5 ex/mt + image Oh well!

Mine is the 1968 Topps only because my dad gave it to me. If I had to pick one out without any sentimental reasons it would be the 1953 Bowman.

1959 Bazooka. My favorite Topps regular issue would be the '62.

These are my favorites. The 53 Bowman and 53 Topps are special cards but I would really like to have a 1952 Topps.

Mine is the 1966 Topps. It was the summer after my third grade year in elementary school, and I was heading to Cooperstown with my Dad for HOF weekend in 1988. I wanted a Mantle badly, and saved hard. I think I brought something like $40 with me to Cooperstown (which felt like about $1,000,000 to an 8 year old) and I bought it for $24 at a card show.

I have a handful of possessions I would be devastated to lose, and that card is one of them.

All Mantles are my "favorite" - My most favorite is the Topps 1962 #200...preferably in PSA 10 which of course I'll likely never own. LOL

I have so many favorites, and I have been very, very fortunate enough to own almost every Mantle I ever wanted, including my co-favorite, the 1952 Topps. I bought it from Larry Fritsch as MINT in February of 1973 for $25. Larry wrote me a nice note, which I still have, expressing "though the price is high....." I finally consigned it to a Mr. Mint auction just before Mickey's illness became known. Later, I deeply regretted selling it, as you can imagine. I needed funds for a down payment on a house, a good reason for a family man. But the '52 was so beautiful, the colors so magnificent. Today I believe it would have graded a PSA EX-MT 6. I miss it not because of its obvious increased value, but its stunning beauty. I never tired looking at it.

I felt I had to choose between the 1952 Topps and my other favorite Mantle. I knew some day I could eventually get another '52 Topps, but as for replacing that other Mantle, no way. I have never regretted my decision, though. The card may not be as popular, but that is not the issue. The exquisite looks of the other Mantle easily matches the 1952 Topps, and its story is, if anything, a lot more enthralling, which is saying something most invidious. However, unless you know a lot about Stahl-Meyer Franks baseball cards, you would never believe me.

I tip my hat to those who selected the 1959 Bazooka, 1953 Topps, 1953 Bowman and 1956 Topps. I loved the story from our collecting brother who wanted a 1966 Topps. I have always loved that card, too. Same with the 1960 Topps. The first Topps Mantle I ever saw was a 1960 #350. My buddy Eddie owned it. Naturally, he refused my pleadings to trade. That did it. I became a Mickey Mantle collector off and on since that day in the spring of 1961.

Salute. Respectfully, Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)
  • Hands down the 1959 Bazooka is my favorite Mantle followed by '52T and '57T with the ghostly apparition to the Mick's left.

    Hi Chris

Was just talking about Mantle with my wife tonite - sitting at Starbucks - and how I wish I had picked up a 52T Mantle around 1989. Enough'fa'dat.

Don't really have a favorite - but this is my most oddball - this card is blank backed and comes in the 1950s/60s Mickey Mantle Baseball Game - in fact, it's usually missing from the board game when sold - thus I paid a slight 'premium' for the game.

    image

The game cards are kinda cool also:

Not sure if the insert card is a 'must' for the Mantle collector?

Last -- I do have a favorite Mantle "piece" - it's this exhibit card vending machine display card - this is the bottom panel insert to the machine - the large panel above will have 9 cards - I believe (I do have a 9 card panel that comes from the exhibit card company "file" sale).

    Thanx Al.

I no longer get SCD - I'm thinkin' of started it up again - I was a continuous subscriber from 1990 to 2008.

I like Mantle stuff but am not a "Mantle collector" - I guess I just like NY/Brooklyn stuff - reminiscent of growing up in NYC.

    Hope you are well Al.
