San Jose Show 2010

dogwooddogwood Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭✭
Wow, The Bayshore Ballroom at the Doubletree Hotel, already.
No more fairgrounds.
60 tables all sold out.
Who's going?

We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

    Whenzit?

I grew up in South San Jose (Almaden Valley), my sister and her family still live there, her kids go to the school we went to 30 yrs ago.

May combine a long overdue visit home with a little coin show action image

I will be there this year, and if the new location brings with it a good show that is supplemented by good management then I will consider resuming setting up at this show again in the future.

Earlier in the decade this show had over 100 tables. Despite this coming show being sold out and a handful of dealers being relegated to a waitlist, the table count has decreased dramatically to only 60 tables. This demonstrates the extent of (and possibly permanent) the damage the move to the fairgrounds caused in such a short span of time. The club will cite a smaller room and different layout as cause for the decrease, but dealers like Don Rinkor or myself know the real story.

The move to the new location was an excellent decision and came just in the nick of time for this show.

Todd, do you mean will you be taking coin pictures at the show? Or just picking up coins to photograph them later? I have 2 or 3 I would like to get done. Can I drop them off the first day and pick them up a day or two later at the show?

I will be there Friday and Saturday but no table. I was downsized to the wait list with the location shift.

Still I support the move to the new venue wholeheartedly. Much safer, nicer facility that will hopefully encourage improved attendance and revive the show which has suffered he past few years.

I don't feel too bad being on wait list with some of the others I am aware of also not setting up.

Since I am not set up I will be there Saturday only. I have a lot of stuff I can do here to get caught up and wander a 60 dealer show in a day when I'm not set up. image

Gee, that's close enough that I think I'll come down Saturday... Would be nice to meet a few names I see here... I could use the exposure, might find me a nice coin or two... Looking to fill a few Morgan holes, and maybe add one or two for a Type set... cool.

Sounds like it'll be a good show - and the hotel looks quite nice.
Have a great time everyone...I'll be at a tiny little show on Saturday
in Ft Myers - but I've got my hopes up that I'll find something !!

I just bought an AU 58 - 1883 with Cents V Nickel from a Ft Myers dealer
this week - and maybe he can help me locate a few missing Mercuries...

We just got an email about that - it starts at 3:00 p.m.

With the biggest storm yet to come, I'm waiting to see whether the Grapevine will be open tomorrow morning, otherwise, I'll have to take the 101 which adds another hour to my drive, assuming there are no mudslides, etc. on that highway too!

The 3:00pm makes sense. On the schedule it said setup ended at 9pm on Thursday but didn't provide a starting time.

As of right now the largest storm of the week just passed through and tomorrow morning's storm isn't supposed to be strong. It's also been relatively warm with the snow level around 5000 feet. The Grapevine doesn't quite go that high so the pass will probably be okay tomorrow.

They said it was going to be worse than the previous one but really wasn't. The rain and wind has mostly let up by now and I can see a few pockets of blue sky. You just have to watch out for the occasional rumble of thunder.

I have two PCGS orders about to ship today. If only I knew you in advance you were heading over to CU...

One everlasting tradition for the SJCC show is the propensity for rain during the show period. It could be the driest year on record for the area but when it's show time it'll invariably rain.

Ditto for the Redwood Empire show in Santa Rosa, CA in February. Nothing beats parking your car in the mud at the fairgrounds. At least for this SJCC show this time there'll be pavement to park on.

So I checked the internet before I left to see which route I should take (5 or 101) and chose the 5 since it was still open while the 101 had several mudslides that had closed one lane in a couple places. I left my house around 9am yesterday morning (wanted to miss the LA traffic) and got to the Magic Mountain area (just below the Grapevine) at around 10:15 only to discover I was just about 30 cars behind the last car they let through the pass before they closed it!!!! Aaaargggg! I waited at a truck stop for about half an hour then decided to ask the CHP what my options were. He said based on the rain forecast, the pass could be closed ALL DAY but said I could go back and either take the 101 or the 14 through Lancaster/Palmdale, then the 58 through Mojave, which would dump me onto the 99 in Bakersfield, where I could cross back over to the 5 which is what I ended up doing.

The great part was that when I finally crossed over to the 5, I was literally the only one on my side of the highway for a mile in either direction!!!! For those of you not from California, the 5 is a major trucking route that goes from the Canadian border to the Mexican border - I have NEVER seen it deserted like this and it sure was very eerie to be practically all alone on that highway!

So, what normally would have taken 5 1/2 hours took me 8 hours, but at least I arrived here all in one piece! As far as the show goes, I really like the new location, it's right off the freeway, in a roomy ballroom in a very nice large hotel, with easy unloading, and lots of security. I think this venue is SOOOO much better, and that's what I hear from most of the other dealers as well. I set up (mostly), had a wonderful dinner with good friends here in the hotel at Spencer's Steak House, then pretty much passed out in my room. I'll post more later.....

$6 for the first hour, $3 each hour after that.
Go to the show everybody! I've just had a hectic morning (Chase Bank!) and this was my tipping pointimage
The hotel is by the airport so they have a right to charge, but even some downtown lots are 3 free hours.

There is "free" parking at the commercial buildings across the street and at the shopping center 1/2 block away. Otherwise, parking is $3.00/day if you scan/validate your ticket at the door to the coin show.

It's about 4pm and the show has slowed down, so I have a minute to make a brief report. Attendance has been steady, better than most expected due to the weather and new location. Most of the dealers are very pleased with this location, though I think the ones that didn't get in (not as many tables as the fairgrounds), some of whom I understand have been doing this show for years but didn't get their applications in soon enough, are very unhappy! Even though he limited several dealers who normally have two tables (like me!) to only one table, the bourse chairman said he wasn't sure what they were going to do next year to accommodate the ones who didn't get a table. He mentioned splitting the show into two separate rooms (actually, two separate floors), but I think everyone is nixing that idea!

I picked up a few pretty toned Lincolns, which of course I will have Todd photograph for me. Sales have been ok, nothing to write home about, but decent. We had a really good dinner at the steakhouse here and are going back again tonight! Then I may go play cards at Bay 101, or maybe wait til tomorrow night - I'm still pretty tired from that long stressful drive yesterday!

    That's about it for now....

Well, it's 10am. It's now time to stop drinking coffee and reading the CU forum.

It's time to go to the San Jose coin show.
