1912 "matte proof" Lincoln Cent on ebay, from Great Southern ending in 3 plus days

I was wondering if any of the Lincoln Cent matte proof collectors had looked at the 1912 "matte proof" Lincoln Cent that Great Southern had in a current ebay auction ending in three plus days -- the auction numbr is 290387431594 -- and what makes me suspicious about this coin is that they are putting quotes around the words matte proof in the title line. In this case when you use the quotes around a description like this you are in a sense hedging your bets with an implied "so-called". I saved the coin photos to my computer, both obverse and reverse
and after blowing them both up the rims look slightly rounded on the top of the obverse and the bottom of the reverse. I do not know if this is really a matte proof but was just wondering if others had looked at this coin and what they thought of them using the quotes around the wording matte proof. buffnixx

From the pics, it looks like a proof to me.
Every man is a self made man.
  • Well he says only 2172 minted so he must be saying its a Matte. I am thinking he is using the quotes because its a matte proof which not everyone is familiar with especially on Ebay.
  • He most likely took it out of a NCS or ANACS holder. I am sure it's a proof but knowing that dealer it is not problem free. that color looks off to me

It looks like a MPL to me, though the pictures are not clear enough to confirm most of the diagnostics., The E in WE should be slightly doubled, with the bottom leg having a slight upcurl. It seems to show this.

Most 1912's seem to have a lot of color and woodgraining. I think many coins of this date were wrapped in the Mint tissue for decades but a lot were cleaned later. This coin clearly does not show the color but seems to have some of the woodgrain.

    Dunno.............
  • Definitely looks off. Cleaned and is starting to tone again.

"As per our customers' request, we have added a great deal of Raw inventory to our selection of auction listings."

I understand some would like to buy raw coins - but coins that would cost big money I'd personally want certified. This coin is not certified - and I believe there is a reason why.
  • What a coincidence! I just happen to have a 1912 matte proof Lincoln here, pix below for comparison. Mine is in a PCGS genuine holder so that gives me confidence it really is a proof.

Nice Coin! The one above, that is.

The OT coin looks strange to me. The toning is unappealing and the color is off from what I've seen. Woof!
