The Official "Boy Did I Do a Dumb Thing" Thread

This would kind of be the antithesis of the highly sought after "You Suck" award.

In the Indian Head Cent series, I have two varieties attributed to me. Both 1896, S-7 & S-9. I went to look for them (the discovery pieces) and they have disappeared. I believe they were sold in error for probably next to nothing.

Oh well.......
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

My dumbest thing was asking a question about a coin BEFORE I had it in hand.

Many lessons learned on that one.

    Enjoy the New Year

I sold this coin for $35, back when it was an old fatty PF66 holder.

Bragging in public about a cherry pick before the seller (who reads this forum) shipped the coin.

That was 6 years ago and I'm still waiting for the coin to arrive.

For me, knowing about the Cheerios Pattern Sac four months before David Lange announced it via NGC and not buying up a slew of them in their packaging. They were going for about $100. each, give or take, and there were plenty within that time frame I could have purchased and held. I didn't buy any. Probably about the dumbest thing I've done.
Second though is purchasing off a bid board a Colonial issue (for $22.) that I sold for $3,500. only to quickly discover that astute buyer flipped the coin immediately for $33,500. as it was one of about seven known for the variety. Had I done even a little of my own homework I could have found that out for myself.
No wonder he bank transfered the funds immediately to my account and had me overnight express the coin to him- I didn't have time to change my mind.

edit your post to remove info and start looking at old sales records. Try the buy back.

also you may still have them, but have put them in some place "safe."

You didn't put them in appropriately labelled flips or something similar? I find that really hard to believe. Try to Remember What You Did!

    Good Luck.

I thought, with all the mistakes I've made, that this would be hard. But actually not. The photos say it all...about a $1,000 brain fart.
