Heritage sale begins today and I haven't seen a single thread about it...

Seems a bit strange. Will I be the only one there? I hope so, but my banker may feel otherwise.

I was hoping everyone had forgotten about it to get the competition down. I don't have any bids in until tomorrows lots, and won't be in NYC until Thursday. You have a table don't you? I was planning on coming by to meet you.

The lots I was tracking have all inched past my level of interest so I am just a spectator this time around.

I watched some of the Canadian nickels sell; several went for MUCH more than the on-line high bids.
    When in doubt, don't.

Well lots of the coins I would be interested in are overgraded, oversexed, and overpriced.

  • << <i>oversexed >>

    ?? explain please!
  • By oversexed I take it to mean "overly introduced", as in excellent, but very flowerly, descriptive language.

And I think that's an apt description.

I still bit on some of them however image

(Caution: British coin oriented post, as usual).

There are a lot of proofs in the floor sale. They are fabulous but outside of my core collecting interest. I don't expect much of a haul from this auction compared with the June '09 offerings from Heritage and Goldberg.

I will be bidding moon money on a couple of lots in the non-floor sale, so don't bother bidding on those. image

Heritage so very rarely auctions off coins in the series that I collect that I rarely bother looking at their auctions.

Other than the usual overpriced Red Book listed varieties, there is exactly 1 piece in this set of auctions.

All the coins on my watch it list are Brrritish of course. And yes, indeed they are oversexed - meaning they are over described and not really as significant in the scheme of things, rather lowish grades in my opin. There is one particular half crown which catches mine eyes though.

  • I have my eye on two pieces. One I'll probably get and the other I most certainly won't.

Floor bids are losing, but internet auction the week after is doing OK so far.

The "Canadiana" collection grossed about $3.8 million w/juice. I got waxed on the 3 pieces I bid on (as expected).

Oh well, more $ to spend on the floor of the show. See you there.

I also got shut out on the Canadian, but I admit that my bids were too conservative. I could have easily spent a ton if I didn't have to resell them. Lots of great coins sold at fair prices. I expect to do better with the British, but we'll see...

Why it took so long? RIght now it is 8PM PST the the auction lot is 20660. They need to auction 21201 lots. THis auction run overnight?

I think they try to interrupt dinners in as many time zones as possible. Part of the "corporate mission statement", or something like that.

Looks like it will run another 5 to 6 hours.
  • Some crazy prices for Canadian coins to be sure! Still a few bargains to find in all those diamonds.
  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,659 ✭✭✭✭✭
No offense to our Canadian friends, but any long run of one country should have its own session.
Who wants to wait for all those lots, either on the floor or on the net?

Heritage did the same thing with all the Japanese MOF coins in the May 2009 Long Beach sale.
Several hundred lots of identical Japanese gold.

The sheer number of Canadian lots is one thing that kept me from attending the sale tonight.

Andy, did you buy the Toonie struck on a Sac planchet?

That was one lot I would have considered bidding on. Very cool!

  • Well, I went 1/1 on lot 20445. Many thanks to our Mr. Eureka for his expert eye(s). A tough little jewel in an even tougher grade. Maybe, someone with knowledge can post a pic./link for me.

Nope. Actually, I didn't buy much of anything last night. I do expect to buy quite a bit today, though.

One for four. But the one I got is one I have been wanting for a while. If this is all I win, I feel successful.

I'm 3 for 6 so far today, a few lots left to go.
  • I'm 4 for about 12 or 13 and finished.

Bottom line is that I paid almost double what I thought I would have to pay for the 4; had to let the rest ride on by.

Bad news for me of course, but it looks like pretty good news for the coin market.

Just hope it holds up when I have to sell to pay the light bill image

Only bid seriously on one piece and lost it.

The 65BN 1869 halfpenny fetched $1,725 including the 15% juice. Wow. (No, this was not the lot I pursued)

The 1869 was one of the ones I lost, I went to 1300 then quit. On the up side two of the lots I got were considerably cheaper than I thought they would be. I'll post my winnings shortly.

Two for two in the British section. There were a few bargins to be had, and there seemed to be a number of coins that went way above the high estimate.

  • JCMhoustonJCMhouston Posts: 5,306 ✭✭✭
Well I've been wanting one of these in Bronzed Copper, but since it's well outside my main collecting interest I didn't want to pay moon money, this one went pretty cheap so I snagged it. 1804 5 Shillings ( Bank of England $) in PCGS PR63.

    image

I already have a higher grade 1826 penny but I was intrigued by the severe flan cracking, it went for about 1/2 of estimate so I picked it up. It's in NGC 64 BN. The strike is really hammered on this one also.

    image

And finally although I lost the 1/2 d I picked up the 1834 Will. IV penny in 65 BN.

    image

It was a funny old auction, some of the things went really cheap, and some well over previous pricing. I thought a lot of the copper and bronze proofs of record went pretty cheap overall, although I saw a few of them went very dear.

Just upped my one bid by proxy live. After due consideration, of course. Edited to add: Gotta have it. image
  • RobPRobP Posts: 483 ✭✭
Came second on half a dozen, won one lot for selling on and lost the plot on 4 more including the one I was most interested in. This was the 1926 proof 1/2d which from my records appears to be one of only two available. I have the other one and there isn't much between them, but was looking to upgrade on the grounds that tonight's coin was the one with a provenance - ex Rogers, Peck and Norweb. C'est la vie. A surplus of collectors over available pieces was the likely reason for the hammer price.
  • Well, I did it! I broke into British coinage. Andy L. secured the 1700 William III Shilling (lot 21683) and the 1797 George III Twopence (lot 21776) for me. What was I thinking? Oh well, I guess that I've dipped my big toe into the 'other side of the pond'. To help commemorate my lack of focus and newest area of collecting, could someone post the pics for me (as I still don't know how) and make me feel better image about my out of control behavior? image

I can't post the pix right now, but here are the links: 1700 William III Shilling and 1797 George III Twopence. Both look beautiful.

Could not compete for my target list given very high pricing levels, but was able to secure a very rare Israel piece (around 1000 pieces known) which I have yet to see in such grade.
