Everyman (woman) Set Suggestion -- What do you think?

The top everyman (woman) sets will contain all AU58 coins. It is very much like the proof state quarters, modern proof, proof presidential dollars etc. If you want to be on top you have to have those PR70DCAM (top grades), and the AU58 is the top grade in the everyman sets. And while I'm at it why aren't these called Everybody, Everyone, or Everyday sets? We do live in a world where women are active in everything men are active in.

I would like to suggest a true everyman set would be something like full even grade sets i.e. Good, Fine, Very Fine etc. These sets could have a minus points system. If you are going for a full good set then use a VG or an AG would be minus 1; FR or F minus 2 etc. This way anyone with a full complete set in any grade would have the same chance to have a complete top set. Someone with deep pockets would do the AU58; someone starting out or less deep pockets could do a GD04 and if every coin in every spot has the same grade, these collectors would both have a top set.

These sets are called everyman set, but I don't know if everyman can afford a complete set of AU58 coins. Some series the AU58 coins are quite expensive.

What do you think?

I agree that it seems unfair to the (shallow pocketed) collector ,but it will always be that the wealthier collectors will be able to put toghether the top sets if they desire to.I think your idea would work though!

A great idea. "Everyman" says to me "every collector" and I think that should include all variations of sets. There are already the best and the worst so why not make room for the middle grades. The more groups that PCGS creates means that many more slabs and fees. In turn, that would create more interest in the lower grade coins and an increase in business would be inevitable. Imagine type sets by grade, or a first year type set by grade. How about a key date type set broken down by the different grades. How about a type set of "Genuine" by the numbers. Every collector would have a shot at a registry set of their choice. Wow!

    VERY good idea.

You want a challenge? Put a set of Walkers, Barbers, SLQs, etc together in, say, VF30 or VF35.

Heck, Put a short set of Walkers together in VG8... see how easy that is! image

    Interesting idea . . .

No reason why it wouldn't work, but the lack of coins (and future lack of coins) in some lower certified grades would always make this a proposition that might only appeal to a very select group of collectors, i.e. those who absolutely must vie for the top of a Registry but would rather spend money certifying a VG Roosie than purchasing an AU 20-Center. To each, their own.

I believe PCGS evaluates the collecting mentality quite well and feels the Everyman is a place where many of us can opt for 'completeness' over a high rank. JMHO, but to put it more succinctly, I believe the number of people who would try to challenge for a "VG" set of Buffs is small, but the number who would try for completing a set of certified Buffs in any type of grade might be larger. It's just all about the coins available and who might be willing to feel certification of a large number of 45-cent VG Buffs is worth a place on the Registry.

In any case, if it works for the collecting public and PCGS' business model, it'll fly.
