1984 Fleer Update Set and the Value of the Registry

So my investment in the November/December grading special completed my 1984 Fleer Update set with - what I think would be - a .9591 registry ranking. That is if I had the set registered. Final grades arrived yesterday and, while I am still chewing on it, I think I am satisfied with PSA's assigned grades. If there is interest I will post cards graded, some comments, and scans in the next day or two and try to solicit some further comment.
I would appreciate getting the board's opinions on the following questions:
- While the 1984 FU set may not be the collector's darling it once was, where does it stand as a covetted set and what are the options for a comeback? Will Clemens need to be ambushed by Jim Gray at the 2017 All Star Game to regain collector favor?
- What does registering the set do for me? I have read a lot about the registry here and am still uncertain about why to do it. Is it accurate that registering the whole set of 132 cards would cost somewhere in the realm of $1320? If I registered all cards, I would be the Number 3 set. However getting to number one would be tough. In 2009 I lost on Mike Fitzgerald, Mike Smithson, and Jeff Robinson PSA 10s on ebay with average bids of $80 each. It scares me to think what it would take to win these lo pop commons and I do not think I could afford it. I have some thoughts on how successful I would be having these graded a 10 thru my own submission, but that is for a later post.
- By forum rules, is this my only allowable post today or is that limitation specific to trade solicitations?

2- It costs nothing to register a set as long as the cards are already graded.
3- There is little to no investment potential for any modern graded complete set, so if you're going to do it, do it because it's fun. Also, wait out the 'low pop' commons. They will come down. Look at the VCP history on just about any mid 80s pop 6 common. They usually start in the $75-$100 range for the first and second and end up at $9.99 for the 5th and 6th.
4- You're better off not posting at all just to be safe, but if you feel like you have to start a thread make sure it's purpose is to bash a longtime forum member. Those almost always end up well for the guy who started the thread.

CDsNuts is right on. Collect for the fun of it and modern sets have no investment potential. This card grading stuff is awesome and
addictive.
Boy, grading the entire set is not cheap. Send in a few cards and get an idea of what a 10 or 9 looks like. Get yourself
educated on PSA submissions and welcome to this great forum.

I am in the minority, but I disagree that there is not an investment opportunity for sets like your 84 Fleer Update. The best stuff will always have a market and buyers. I collect mainly what people here would consider "modern". While I don't agree with joe blow rookie being 2X, 3X, etc more expensive then say the 89 Score Aikman rookie, it will continue to happen as people are influenced by who they see on Sportscenter every night. I think you will continue to see a lot of guys like me (35 years old with some business sucess) go back and start to pick up high end cards/sets from our youth that we could only dream about when we were 10-15 years old! For example, this month alone I have picked up 9 or 10's of: 84 Fleer Update Clemens, 86TT Canseco Tiffany, 82 Topps Ripken, 90 Leaf Sosa, 79 Topps Ozzie Smith. I don't pick up as much of the vintage items as I never saw those guys play and don't have the memories or attachments to them. I guess this is the long way of repeating what the above posters stated -- collect what you enjoy!
