I just spent 462.00 on 2010 Scott catalogs .......

I don't have 462.00 worth of stamps but thinking about getting into them ....
Am I crazy for that too ????????

    Knowledge is a must in stamp collecting. When you do start buying stamps, the information contained in the catalogues might help you from making major mistakes.

    Good investment? Reference books are almost always a good investment.

    A good investment would have been purchasing the 1840-1940 Scotts Classic Specialized (worldwide stamps to 1940) or the US Specialized.

    Then, use the information provided in the stamp on cover listings! But I am biased against fill-the-hole stamp collecting.

    Agreed. Unless you're dealing in a lot of modern crud, the Classic and/or U.S. Specialized is all you need (not that the Classic is inexpensive at $80+).

    Stamp collecting is done at a leisurely level...unlike coins, youstill have buyers, but not like the 10's of thousands wanting a certain series of coins. Also, the collectors are long term and not flippers.

    possibly - values in catalog are hard to translate to market
    - some unused 80 year old stamps are worth less than face


    but I guess it is about getting value for purchase, liquidity, and selling prices

    Catalogs are better for info than anything, many times the prices are meaningless. I really want a new Scott specialized but I refus eto pay $80+ for it. Could've got one for 56.00 at stamp show, used $ for stamps instead.

    I buy it for the info also. I like to pick up an older used edition on ebay for a fraction of the original price.

    My local dealer had a box of really old Scott catalogs last week, and just for giggles I picked up editions from 1914, 1901, and 1896.

    It's amazing to see just what useful information has been pruned from the catalogs over the years.

    One of the really useful items was a 5-6 page list of philatelic terms, cross-referenced in English, French, and German.
