I don't mean to get one of those ugly posts going, I simply mean to acknowledge that Christmas means CHRIST. If you don't believe then, well, I'm sorry for you. But there's still time!
Happy holidays to all. May all your Christmas lights stay lit and your chocolate Santas not melt.

Considering the absence of evidence indicating that Jesus even existed-- as a historical figure, much less as some kind of cosmic saviour-- we can't even say that much. That having been said, this is a great time of the year to recount the year's foibles and successes, and to prepare for another year.

What are you talking about? There is tons of evidence that he existed and almost every notable historian out there would tell you that he did. So I'm not sure where the "absence of evidence" claim comes from.

The 'absence of evidence' comes from the fact that there is not a single written account of Jesus from anybody who would have been one of his contemporaries. In other words, we have no eyewitness accounts of a man named Jesus. All 'records' of the life of Jesus were written after his death.
This is not insignificant. We know from Mark that Jesus supposedly spoke to great multitudes, and that he had (again, according to Gospel) achieved no small measure of fame and notoriety in his lifetime. And yet there is no mention of Jesus in any of the historical texts from the time. We see no mention of Jesus in the works of Philo, or Josephus, or Pliny, or (perhaps most telling) in the works of Seneca the Younger. To put it simply, Jesus is completely absent from the historical record. This forum obviously isn't the place for this discussion, but you can PM me if you either a) have evidence which contradicts the above assertions, or b) would like to read more about the absence of this historical account.
Moving on, I would like to wish everyone (even Sidepocket) a great Christmas season, and health and happiness in 2010.

Hear, hear! Whatever one's feelings may be on the war(s), I'm sure we can all come to a consensus on a wish for a safe return for our troops overseas, and extend to them our warmest wishes for a pleasant (and uneventful) holiday season. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be a mother or a father, and to spend the holidays in a war zone. These people deserve our respect and admiration.
There's nothing wrong with critical analysis. But without faith in something, we become robots. I'm fine with someone placing faith in Chewbacca or the Flying Spaghetti Monster mind you, not necessarily Christ. I'm glad we live in a nation that allows us this freedom, and better yet, doesn't use tax money to support one faith over another.
Kiss me once, shame on you. Kiss me twice.....let's party.
<< <i>There's nothing wrong with critical analysis. But without faith in something, we become robots. >>
That's one approach. Another is to say that if we lose our sense of skepticism, or our intellectual curiosity, or our delight in confronting new solutions and responses to conventional problems and beliefs, then we become robots. There are likely many ways we can lose our humanity- placing reason above faith does not (at least to me) seem like one of these greater dangers.
