Time to restart the Play it Forward giveaway? (started, see other thread)

I went ahead and started the giveaway. See the other thread.

Still no word on the last package. Oh well, things happen.

So, is there any interest in reviving the Never Ending Giveaway that Stork started?

This post is just to see if anyone is still interested - not for entries! Here's the thread where Stork first proposed it, complete on an outline of how it works.

If you guys are still interested post or PM me your suggestions or improvements on Stork's idea and we'll get things rolling this weekend. I'll scrounge up some goodies in the meantime image

  • I'd like to be in on this. Stork's terms are fine for me, but a slightly more rigid definition of the rules might be in order to ensure success.

Here's the thread. I was the last winner, but Raq went off the grid around that time and I never received it. Sounded like she had more going on in the real world - was about to head out to VA for her daughter's graduation from boot camp, so no biggie. If she ever swings back around we'll just have her send the loot back to Stork or something image
  • As one of the winners I thought it was a great idea. I received some wonderful coins from the box and contributed some silver to the new package and sent it along. I think the concept was great but I don't know how we would go about policing the rules to make sure it would continue. Someone got a very nice batch of coins though. I for one would love to be included in any chance to start this up again.

  • As one of the past winners, I would not participate (at least in the near term).

However, I thought it was a great idea and thoroughly enjoyed selecting coins from the box to keep and choosing others to contribute.

I'm not really sure how we can set it up to ensure that the Never Ending aspect stays true. We could make it like a tag. Or just have everyone interested sign up at the beginning, with ongoing registration, and make a roster for who receives it next, late comers just get added to the end of the list. Takes some of the suspense out of the giveaway, but it would give us a chance to make more targeted contributions considering the wantlists of the next in line. And though it somewhat goes against our free wheelin darkside reputation, maybe we should require references?

I haven't completely figured out what I'll be adding, but it'll probably be around $100 worth of stuff. Small potatos compared to some of the tags the the Lightsiders have, but still enough that it'd suck if it goes MIA.

Other terms/ideas - I'll be using a small flat rate box from USPS. Base cost is $4.95, plus, what, another $4-5 for insurance & signature confirmation? or $13 base for overseas. So that's manageable, secure and makes it easy to get fresh boxes for shipping (they're free!).

And one thing we talked about but never really did last time was some method of tracking. I was thinking that to keep it in the numismatic spirit each recipient could add a state quarter from where they live, or other local currency if it goes overseas. Then the rules would be that no one could take out of this little side stash. (but what happens to that at the end, if it comes - or when the side stash gets too big and crowds out the rest of the loot? we can deal with that when the time comes)

Let me know what you guys think - should we make this a structured affair? I think it could work if we get enough members to make it interesting.

I am game. I have some nicer things to put into it. I have a spin on it though, which I would like to propose. Basically, Stork started the whole thing off with HER own coins, which she was not ever expecting to ever see again and was not expecting to ever be involved with ever again. I find it sort of unfair and not very productive for the person who restarts it with there own coins NOT to at least have it come back to them to: 1) have first dibs on the new product, and 2) see how the progress is going, so to speak. I think that whomever decides to redo this should be able to change the rules so that the Play it forward keeps on going. Maybe, every third person, the collection should go back to Spoon and then it goes to another group of individuals. I only say this because, Spoon has the most to lose. Any other input would be appreciated. -Dan

I don't really mind the loss. But your idea does make a certain kind of karmic sense image

Since it is a Never Ending Giveaway, it'll come back to me once we cycle through the list. After we get our initial group of participants I'll randomize the list, any newcomers will be added to the end of that. Then when we reach the end, it'll come back to me and I'll randomize the entire list again. Maybe we can make some rules to shake things up like allowing for trades with another participant for position in the lineup.

I think I'm going to go ahead with this structured version of it. I'll type up an outline of how it'll work, rules, etc and submit it for comments. Then we'll start up the list.
