There's a card that ends on the 'Bay tomorrow that I just don't care how much it costs me... I GOTTA

I'm 1 card short of completing a set... and it ends tomorrow on the 'Bay. It's a card that I haven't seen come up yet in 2009.... and I don't care what it goes for, I WILL WIN IT!

Honestly, it's a card that probably worth about $10, maybe a tad more/less. It's a PSA 8 common... and will gladly share it's identity with everyone once I win it.
This card will complete a 13-month project I've been working on...

Anyone every been in my spot before? ... where a card shows up on the 'Bay and you immediately KNOW you HAVE to have it no matter what it costs??? What was it?

  • Good Luck !!

I've had a few cards pop up that were essential to my collection that I knew would be mine. No matter the cost. Only once did I feel that way about a card and back down. It was a $20 card at best and I gave up at $110 IIRC. Good thing is I later got to know the owner and rec'd it free.

I just got outbid this morning on a 1972 Topps Cloth lot that had Cardinals player Marty Martinez in it. That would have finished my team set. I would have bid much more to win the lot, but I wasn't around to check on it. I was really, really ticked off that I lost it. I probably won't see another one for 5 years.

A very nicely centered 1975 Topps Mini Johnny Bench PSA 7. The moment I saw it, I told myself that I had to have it at any cost. I'd been looking for months for a card as nicely centered all the way around on front and as richly colored as that one. However, just before putting in my bid in the last few seconds, I backed off on the "at all costs" idea (I figured if I was going to do that, I would wait for an 8 or 9), but still put in a motivated bid for it. Anyway, I won it for a little above the SMR value for a 7 as I recall. It's still one of my favorite cards in my collection.

66 Tony Conigliaro PSA 9. I seriously would have done bad things to good people for it. Finally completed my Conig Basic set about 2 months ago!
  • 2005 UD Heroes Jersey card of Jackie Robinson #/10. There are 5 different cards and I already had 4 of them. Took me a few years of waiting for them to come on eBay and when the last one did, I knew I had to bid a huge number at the last few seconds in order to get it. I think most of them cost me around $75 each, well I bid $200 at the end. Got it for $45.

Another time I missed out bidding on one of them and contacted the buyer and she was really cool and sold it to me for what she paid. And she even was on the look out for me trying to help me complete the set. Now I am only missing 3 cards for the master set of Robinson from the set. They are 3 of the 1 of 1 gold parallels. I have all 5 of the Jersey #/10, Blue #/10, Red #/75, Green #/199, Base #/575. Hope those 3 1 of 1's come up some day.
  • I got this in February. I had been looking at my McGwire checklist, looking at this card thinking I might never see it. It was my #1 most wanted card. It came up for auction 3 days later, and happened to end on my birthday. I was hoping to get it for $1800, but it ended up costing me every last cent of my bid, $2200.

plenty of times have I rolled the dice and threw down a enormous bid on a card that would sell for 10% of it, on a good day. sometimes you just can't mess around and the 'hobby' aspect (enjoyment) of cards supersedes the market value (sanity).

During the last big 71 FB lot on the bay I thought I would quit screwing around and doubled all my bids for 8's and 7's that I normally would bid. Needless to say I only won 30% of the lots as everyone else had the same idea. I was losing out on PSA 7 commons at 25 bucks a pop.

I put a ridiculous bid in on a Bossy OPC PSA 9 rookie a few months ago and still lost... I think someone else did the same and ended up with it for almost 900

Good luck with your winning (at a good price) tomorrow!

  • Good luck! I've had a few of those and some I've noticed right away on a seven day listing and it seemed like forever.
  • A couple of months ago, I put down a "gotta have it" bid on a beautifully centered '78 Topps Carew PSA 9. I bid a lot more than I thought anyone in their right mind would ever bid for that card..... at least twice what the card is worth. Probably more than twice.
I did win it, but the underbidder was only eight bucks behind me.

I'm a little sick with my 1948 Leaf Football Master Set and there are some difficult variations. The White Letter, Name Variations and Jersey Numbers and Colors variations come up from time to time, but the White Backgrounds are a major pain in the arse. Although really printing errors as the background color was never printed, several are in the Master Set Registry. I go after ANY of them when they come up (about 1 card pops up on eBay annually) and about 6 months ago there was one of the High Number that was not listed as a White Brackground and was being auctioned raw. It appeared to be about EX condition and would normally sell for about $25-50 depending upon the buyer. I placed a snipe in a range about 20x what the normal card would go for figuring I'd win it for around $200 and wouldn't lose it unless it went over $500. I was quite happy when the auction ended for less than $75. I've since had it graded (a PSA 5.5) and it now resides in my set although PSA won't label it a White Background since it isn't cataloged.

Mine was a 2006 SPx "SPxciting" Jeremy Accardo autographed card, #'ed to 30. It fits in my SF Giants rookie set, and is his "nicer" looking autographed card from his RC year, IN an SF Giants uniform (he was traded to Toronto during the season, and a bunch of card makers did Blue Jays cards for him, instead of Giants).

I set a $22 snipe, and won it for $2.25. image

They were talking about the greatest NHL records on the NHL Network - Gretzky's points, Glenn Hall's consecutive starts etc.

They also listed Bossy's 6 consecutive seasons of 50 goals. I hated the Islanders and Bossy as rivals to the 1980's Gretzky and Oilers - but have come to appreciate Bossy's accomplishments.

However, one commentator explained what it would take to beat Gretzky's scoring record - it was insane - an average of 100 points for 20 years !

I have several auto'd cards of 500 goal scorers including Bossy - but the Gretzky eludes me - a price I cannot afford.

Sorry for the delay.... YEP, I got my card!

It's not very impressive... but here it is:

    image

.... it's significant to me. Why? Well, it was the LAST card I needed to complete my all PSA 8 or better 1975 Topps set!
A whopping $4.25 plus shipping this card cost me! WooHoo!

I'm in the process of registering my set right now... looks like it'll end up around the 18th currently finest set when I'm done putting everything in.

Good luck on everyone's hunts! I'm going in for surgery Wednesday (the 30th,) but plan on working on my next project in a few weeks when I get back at it!

    Oh.. and happy holidays everyone!

Congratulations on finishing up your set Russ, that's always a good feeling. Hope your surgery is nothing too major, and you're up and around soon.
  • The card itself might not be impressive...... but the fact you own a complete graded '75 Topps set is very impressive (at least it is to me)! Congratulations, and I hope your surgery goes as well as possible.

Yesp, I bet we all have those cards in our past. Mine is a 55 Felipe Alou for my raw 1968 Set. Went through a lot of cards before I found a one good enough, and overpaid 3-4 times.

congrats on the set registry completion!
  • Nice. Great set.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Russ - that is impressive - considering I could not even finish my 1975 set in RAW !

What a great set to have slabbed and in PSA 8 - next to the 1971 set, probably the hardest 1970's set to find in mint.

I hope your surgery is just removing some gum or wax stain ...

    cheers

Thanks Guys! This set is my pride and joy (outside of my Sabo collection of course!)

I have a few similar projects like this, but no where near complete. I think I'll continue working on upgrades for this '75 set, but will start to focus on my '71 project.

As far as my surgery goes... I'm having a couple of discs fused in my neck. Even though I'm still relatively young, I guess my neck is in bad shape.
I have 3 slipped discs, one of which that's threatening my spinal cord... that's the one the doc will be removing Wednesday.
I'm remaining positive on the whole thing... and know I'm in good hands. From what I hear, recovery takes a while. Don't worry, it won't be long before I'm back on-line!
