1830 Half Dime PHOTOS ADDED

Are there bust half dime varieties for 1830 or are they all common?

Huge amount of die clash on the obverse you can see the shield the head of the eagle and the wing...Surfaces are PL, hairlines are raised like die polish, really nice midnight blue toning that does not show up in photos

there are 14 die marriages, of which three have two remarriages each. Three die marriages are rare (R5 or better). Post a pic, send a PM, let's see what you got!

it looks like 1830 LM-4.1 or LM-4.2. Tough to tell. These of the most difficult die remarriages to differentiate from one another, IMO. If there is the tiniest of die chips developing in the upper loop of the second S in STATES, it is surely an 1830 LM-4.2.

Either way, it is an R-2 die marriage.

that reverse die was first used with the 1830 LM-4.1. Then the reverse was used for the 1830 LM-5, 1829 LM-16.1, 1829 LM-17, 1829 LM-16.2 and then a sixth use for the 1830 LM-4.2. And six times was not the end of it! Next, the reverse was used on the 1830 LM-6 and finally it was used on the 1830 LM-1.2 for a total of eight uses of a single reverse die.

the reference of choice is "Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837" by Logan and McCloskey. Dick Osburn usually has a copy or two for sale. Also check Rich Uhrich's inventory.
