1853 Seated Half Arrows & Rays - Opinions please!

I bought this yesterday as a VF - Seller had it marked as XF.
When I got it home and freed it from the plastic 2x2, there was much more luster evident
in the fields than I could see originaly. Now I'm thinking just maybe it's XF 40. The details seem to be all there.
There are some interesting reverse die cracks. It's also a DDR, but I have not been able to determine just which
variety. There are 3 different ones in my cherrypickers book and the doubling on mine is similar, but not quite
the same as the ones listed in the book. I can't shoot close enough to show the doubling, sorry.

IMO it's still a mid-VF piece, but a nice looking piece with plenty of character image

It looks like a solid VF35 to me. But I don't see, nor would I expect to see any appreciable luster at that grade level.

It is darker in hand, but you could be right. There are no deep or obvious hairlines, but maybe soap & water at some point.
There was enough originality for my tastes.
Like I said, I bought it as a VF and am happy with the price I paid. I was surprised to see a bit of luster
when I got home. The double die reverse is a pretty nice bonus. I Wish I could show you all...

I love the look of that coin myself, from the pics it doesn't appear cleaned to me, but, OTOH, most of these have been messed with at some point it seems. I have one of those at PCGS right now in NGC XF45 that I am trying to cross... we'll see.

PCGS has had that regular submission since 11/18.. no grades yet image

Would this be considered an "off strike" - looking at the reverse right side edge?
  • partagaspartagas Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭
Nice coin, VF35 all day. And no the strike on the reverse isn't anything out of the norm for seated coinage. Unless of course the coin doesn't have edge reeding.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

    I like that one.
I would be proud to aquire such a specimen.

    Solid example!
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.
  • Looks lightly cleaned, VF30+....I like the coin....it's a keeper
  • Got to go with the mob here: VF30+ details, cleaned, and no luster on a coin at that grade level (even if not cleaned). Nice details, though!
