1932-D Washington - Questionable "D"???

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,557 ✭✭✭✭✭
Take a look at this. I have collected Washington Quarters for many years and have looked at many 1932-D's. There is nothing about this coin that would suggest it is not a real 1932-D but the "D" has either ejection doubling or D/D or damaged or could it be added? Here's the picture. Thouhgts?

.....looks suspicious to me. dip it in acetone to see if the mint mark falls off. image

I have no knowledge of die characteristics for this, but based on the way the mintmark meets the field at a right angle I would suspect added.

At work right now, but I know I have a raw '32-D with doubling in the 'D'.
I don't think it's exactly like yours, but will try to get a pix tonight.

Not a quarter man here, but have had a few and it looks legit to me.

That is strike-doubling on the mint mark. It is an indication of a genuine mint mark. Many of the genuine 1932-D quarters have this effect.

I can understand your concern about this particular mint mark on this quarter, it means just about everything for this year. I do know that the mint mark sits in a dished out area on an authentic 1932 specimen and it certainly has that going for it...but is the mint mark made from pushed metal?

    That is the question.

The mintmark looks to be the correct style for 1932. If indeed the mintmark was raised there would be tooling marks to hide the area

on the rim where it was pushed up.

Check the rim for any suspicious abraiding to cover up the act.

What dcarr says; ejection doubling, and the MM is good.
